Here's a step-by-step tutorial to freeze columns/rows/panes in a Microsoft excel sheet.

Steps:

1. Assume you have the set of values (as shown in the picture below) in your excel sheet.

2. To freeze panes, go to 'View' menu option > Freeze Panes. It will show you the freeze panes menu.

3. If you select the ‘Freeze Top Row’ option, the first row in your worksheet will be frozen. As a result, when you use the side scroll bar to scroll your sheet, the top row remains intact and all other rows start hiding behind the top row as you scroll up.

Freeze Top Row

4. This is how a frozen top row looks like. (See picture below). If you observe the selected area, after freezing the top row, the first row is intact, while the rows 2 through 7 are hidden behind the top row due to scrolling.

Freeze First Column

5. If you select the ‘Freeze First Column’ option, the first column in your worksheet will be frozen. As a result, when you use the bottom scroll bar to scroll your sheet, the first column remains intact and all other columns hide behind the first column as you scroll using the side scroll bar.

Unfreeze Panes

6. To unfreeze panes go to 'View' menu option > ‘Freeze panes’ menu and click on “Unfreeze Panes”. (See pic below). If you observe the selected area, the column 'A' has been frozen and the column 'B' and further rows start hiding behind column 'A' as you scroll using the bottom scroll bar.

7. Once you click on “Unfreeze Panes”, the frozen panes get back to normal.
