Updated on October 12, 2011

What is a USB hub? USB hubs are devices that allow you to connect multiple USB devices through a single USB port on your computer, laptop, tablet PC or other compatible devices. Whether your laptop has a single USB port or you want a USB hub to clear the clutter around your desktop, here are two lists that will help you decide which USB hub to buy.

Cool USB hubs

3) Doctor Who Tardis USB Hub

For all the Doctor Who fans, do you even need a description or are you already excited? A replica of the phone booth from the show, this cool USB hub has 4 ports. That's not all. The roof of the phone booth, err USB hub, also has a flashing lantern which is aided by a time-travelling sound effect. These will activate every time you plug in a device in this USB hub. Very cool!

5) Robot USB hub

The best thing about the Robot USB hub is that the robot has adjustable arms. You can add your very own personal touch to this USB hub by making the Robot wave out or simply hold its hand up. Besides 4 USB ports, the robot also has rubber wheels and its eyes light up when the hub is connected to the computer. Make sure you don't buy more than one else they might gang up and attack you.

Best selling USB hubs

Of course, this list is not going to push a product down your throat and that's exactly why you will notice a "What's the catch?" after each USB hub. Make sure you read this for downsides or any peculiarities that a product may have.

Belkin 4 port Ultra mini USB hub
Belkin 4 port Ultra mini USB hub

1) Belkin USB 2.0 4-Port Ultra Mini Hub

Compact, easy to use and great portability are 3 very apt words to describe the Belkin Ultra Mini USB hub. You can plug in up to 4 USB devices into this hub and have access to the standard high speed data transfer, up to 480 Mbps. This product is compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 devices. In plain English, it is compatible with most devices out there. For everyone who's looking to keep a USB hub in their travelling bags or laptop bags, this Ultra mini USB hub by Belkin is highly recommended. It also comes with a lifetime warranty.

What's the catch?

Because this device is compact and light, it does not have a power adapter. This can be a downside for people who want to use a USB hub for their external hard drives which need power. Also, the connecting cable or the tail of this hub is short and cannot be extended. This leaves you with no option than to sit near a power outlet if you are planning to connect a USB device that needs external power.

Plugable 10 port USB hub

2) Plugable USB 2.0 10 Port Hub (with Power Adapter)

As the name suggests, the Plugable USB 2.0 10 Port Hub has 10 ports. What will you do with 10 USB ports? Well that's a different question. But if you are indeed, on the lookout for a 10 port USB hub, then this product is your best buy. It also has a power adapter attached which makes it possible to run USB devices that are going to need external power. As an added bonus, the power adapter is enhanced with over current detection and protection. In the box you will find a 70 inch power cord and a 40 inch USB cable.

What's the catch?

Connectland 4 port Mini USB hub

3) Connectland CL-U2MNHUB-4B 4 Ports USB V2.0 Mini Hub

Another compact USB hub in this list of best sellers is the Connectland 4 Ports USB V2.0 Mini hub. With 4 USB ports, easy connectivity and compatibility, and transfer speeds of up to 480 Mbps, this is a good buy. An added benefit with this USB hub is that each USB port has a separate On/Off switch. This is great for those of you who are really picky about safely removing their devices and then not accessing them until you actually need them. You can simply switch a particular USB port Off rather than having to plug it out and plug it back in again.

What's the catch?

Similar to the Belkin Ultra Mini hub, the Connectland Mini hub too does not have external power and has a small tail. So tough luck for those of you who were planning to run external hard drives which needed external power. You will have to sit near a power outlet or make sure that the cord of the adapter of your HDD reaches the power outlet.

D-Link 7 port USB hub
D-Link 7 port USB hub

4) D-Link DUB-H7 High Speed USB 2.0 7-Port Hub

7 USB ports, transfer speeds up to 480 Mbps, compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 devices, AC Adapter and easy installation are a part and parcel of the D-Link DUB-H7 5 Port Hub. This USB hub also has diagnostic LEDs for each USB port to report their status.

What's the catch?

It's a pity that this great USB hub will work only on an AC adapter. So if you are looking for a USB hub for your laptop or other portable devices that you are going to carry around, you'd want to give this one a miss. This USB also scores very low on the looks and styling department, if at all you care. If only D-Link would have put in some love and effort for a better design and color!

The number of devices that work on USB ports have increased over the years. What's great about these hubs is that they reduce a lot of clutter and prove to be a one point access for all the USB devices attached to the computer. I'm glad you liked this hub!

Interesting hub on USB hubs. I can't live without one of these hubs because there are so many devices I need to connect to the computer.

USBs are still a bit beyond my understanding in general. I love the police box hub though. Makes me think of London mysteries.
