The Challenge of Understanding the Internet

Updated on July 17, 2014

Learning from a Book

I have read many books
I have read many books

How to Understand The Internet and Social Networking Sites

I am writing this hub strictly for my benefit, and of course those who join me in the frustration of navigating around the internet. I have read almost all the hubs on social networking, increasing views, and success in general on HubPages, as well as other writing sites. I am not a total dud using the internet and I have learned a few things on my own. Sometimes I find the instructions more difficult to understand than if I just started randomly pushing buttons. I say that with tongue in cheek. The instructions these talented writers provide are excellent for the average computer speaking person. I learned about computers and how to use them late in life, which in itself is a disadvantage. I sometimes go into serious panic mode when I have to follow instructions or directions. This is a plea for help as well as just venting my feelings.

What I Can Do

  • Turn on the computer.
  • Go to all my bookmarked sites on my bookmark bar and add and remove.
  • I can work most of the social sites though not with great skill nor to my best advantage.
  • I can write hubs and use "most of the capsules".
  • I set up both Amazon, Google, Adsense and Ebay of which made me very proud.
  • I cannot follow most instructions given by helpful writers and friends. This is strictly my fault and not their explanations.
  • I can research topics adequately.
  • I can use Google Adword tool.
  • I can take pictures and download to my picture file.
  • I set up a blog on Blogspot and Wordpress
  • I know how to use the forum with questions and answers.
  • I can comment on hubs.

Will I ever Learn?

I am pulling my hair out
I am pulling my hair out
Simple as OK
Simple as OK

What I Cannot Do

  • I do not use most social networks to my advantage
  • I can download a picture to Pinterest but not add another link to go with the picture.
  • I still do not understand RSS and really how to use it.
  • I have knocked off many people from Google+ but they fortunately came back.
  • I don't understand referral tracker or how to use it.

That is just a beginning of what I don't understand.

I am looking but cannot see

I still don't see it
I still don't see it

So What Now?

After sleepless nights with icons floating in my dreams I am still trying to figure out what to do and how to do it. I need to let you know that though I am above average intelligence, I have major challenges with most mechanical and technical concepts and directions of any kind. However, I can learn a foreign language easily and create great marketing plans, and I am a good cook. I would like to have someone who is really adept at this standing over my shoulder and giving me instructions as I go along. I do know it is not an easy feat learning how to understand social networking and the workings of the internet, but I am trying.

Can I Learn?

Is it Possible for Me to Learn How to Navigate?

LOL, I found this article of yours Carol to be funny, because so many people haven't even made it to your level of online knowledge, and I know it may have taken some time to master much of what you have thus far.

I like your listing of it all, I like your format you chose to write this hub in as well. I think that everything takes time, and as long as your willing to learn it, you will do what it takes to get there just as you have already gotten as far as you achieved online.

I still don't know how to create a complete coded website myself (But I major in apps, RSS feeds, widgets and the likes, I guess I'm your modern day drag and drop master, Hehe), and so I fully understand and can relate to all of your frustrations with the web. Just never give up on trying to learn, and you never know who's articles just might be the right fit for your learning curve.

Overall this was a smooth hub, and written with a style all of your own, and I hope you find that person who can watch over your back, while you plug away LOL :) have a Happy and joyous holiday Carol.

I will be looking for more hub nuggets you surely have to offer, in the near future thanks for sharing this one with us all, thumbs up and getting shared.

Hi Carol... like you I stepped into this world later in life and being a man who rarely uses books or reference material it has been an interesting challenge.

I started in the PC world and crashed and burned many over the years. The average lifespan of them would have been would have been a few days after the warranty was gone. The only way around it was to dive in with both feet and I took a computer repair course.

Since then I have graduated to an all Apple household and love what I can do with them.

Congratulations on learning what you have in this world. Personally I tilt my hat to you and say well done.

      Hugs from Canada

Carol, this a useful and interesting hub. I too struggled with rss feeds until I read a fantastic hub by Victoria Lynn on rss feeds. She has explained it beautifully. The link is

      https://hubpages.com/community/How-to-Use-RSS-Feed...

Though I am in some groups on FB still due to paucity of time I just leave links to my published hubs but don't really have the time to interact .all of us take time, some less, others more to get the complete hang of things. Not to worry. You are doing pretty well with the list of accomplishments.

      Voting up, useful and interesting.

Social networks are good I think if you have a lot of followers or write on a particular subject as you may then join a group. I presume they would then read your articles on the hubpages and up your followers. Personally, I am not there yet, still writing and getting number of hubs up, and find social networking a pain. Thanks for this article, enjoyed it and voted up, interesting and useful.

      Carol

Interesting hub and declaration of your strengths and weaknesses on the Internet and specifically on the Social Networks.

My opinion is that the importance of the social networks and your expectations on what to use them for is the paramount question to be answered.

If you get something really useful and important out of the social networks, you will learn all you need to know to get what you want out of it. But, if you are on the social networks just because it is trendy, then your heart and mind won't be into it, and your knowledge and expertise in them will be just so so.

I personally find little use for them, and my knowledge of them is so what. lol.

Carol, you're done great so far and those other things you need to be able to do are all pretty straight forward - in fact most of them will have had hubs written about them if you go looking :o) I am quite a technical bod cos it's what I did for a living for about 20 years but even I am shocked at the speed with which things move on, scary!

Carol, you certainly aren't alone! I have been seriously thinking of hiring some some computer whiz to help me establish Adsense and all those programs that help fuel the writing $$$. I don't remember how I ever figured out how to do that because I sure don't know how to do it now. All of it is driving me crazy! I am a writer from the past. I cannot believe what people have to do for the online pennies. I have been writing online since 2010. Not very long. That could be most of my problem! LOL!

Carol, you have come such a long way in such a short amount of time. My brain is not "wired" to figure out computers. I do get tap-happy and cannot undo the damage most of the time! For me, no matter what I read and how many times I read it--FORGET IT! So I bumble along and just write. I returned to my blog recently, and everything has changed. I can't even change my profile photo because I don't remember how I did it in the first place! Also, I joined a new site and don't remember how I set up Adsense and all of that. Bumble, bumble. That's the story of my life as a computer whiz. LOL!

I think that you should take the pressure off yourself, and just learn one new thing a week, master it, and then move on to the next task. There really is no rush to learn hubpages and we are all learning together.

Mine is a lot of reading others hubs and trial and error. I bookmark the helpful hubs and come back to them over and over until the light bulb come on. I just wish it would come on a little more often! We will all hang in there together and eventually get it all figured out, then it will change! :)

Hey Carol, I understand what you are saying. I think I have read most of the hubs about SEO and traffic, too. I try to follow the directions, but somewhere along the way, I get confused. Fortunately, there are so many people here on HP's who are willing to help with comments or with hubs. I guess you and I need to keep reading. It may not stick the first few times, but little by little we are adding info to our brains - now if I could just do something about the wiring. LOL Oh yeah, I am a "button" pusher, too, and YES, it has gotten me into trouble. LOL

Great Hub! Votes and shares! :-)

Congrats on a wonderful Hub, you have hit it exactly right! This was practically an image of me! I have trouble reading instructions too, but if I have to start pushing buttons without some background knowledge I panic! So I usually go through the initial panic stage, then spend hours finding good instructions, then study them, then feel frustrated because I understood about 30%, go back to pushing buttons at random! It seems to work, I often "finally get it!" But I do wish this cycle were shorter! However, I have learnt a lot, a lot, a lot, mostly on Hubpages, for which I am ever grateful! Have a good day!
