3 Universal Docking Stations from Targus

Updated on July 9, 2014

Docking stations expand the use of any laptop. Even though the newer model laptops have two to four integrated USB ports and multiple other ports available, a docking station is a very handy gadget to own.

Docking stations can reduce or even eliminate the need to plug and unplug peripherals. Laptops are wonderful because of their portability but they can cramp your style when working on them for extended periods of time.

I do not want to leave out the need for docking stations for desktop computers. My desktop CPU sits below my desk. A docking station could save me a lot of steps.

I own docking stations for two of my Sony laptops. They are OK but both are rather large and would be difficult to pack in case I wanted to take them on a trip. Also, they are proprietary and cannot be used with other laptops that I may have in the future.

Proprietary is a rather unfriendly way to operate. "My way or no way" comes to mind.

Targus is a well known brand to any computer geek as well as to most anyone that even owns a computer. Personally I love to shop through all of their gadgets because I seem to always find things that I have never heard of before. It is cool to find solutions to problems that I did not even realize I had.

You may ask what got me interested in shopping for a universal docking station when I already have two OEM docking stations.

When I come home from working my day job I unload my laptop and start writing. Sometime between booting up and going to bed I leave my laptop long enough to eat. I use flash drives to backup my data and I have an external hard drive that I use sometimes. When I am away from my laptop it may go into hibernation mode. That is normal but I do not want my USB drives to go to sleep. I am very careful to shut them down the correct way as to not accidentally loose my data. You will see from the descriptions below that the Targus Universal Docking Stations have an "always on" feature that will eliminate my problem.

Common peripherals that might be used in a stationary setup are:

  • External monitors
  • External keyboards
  • Full size computer mouse
  • Printer
  • Speakers
