Energy Drives Our Modern World

Take a look around, everything you see is the product of energy. Currently we rely on vast reservoirs of petroleum and mountains of coal. But there is one small problem with the methods we are using to power our lives, we're destroying the natural balance of our ecosystems and polluting the air to the point that people are dying of lung cancer just from taking a stroll outside. Of course the issue is not as bad in some places as it is in others, but our atmosphere is like the skin of an apple. We don't realize just how small, wispy, and fragile it really is.

Some energy facts:

-In 2015, the United States consumed a total of 7.08 billion barrels of petroleum products, an average of about 19.4 million barrels per day.

-A typical (500 megawatt) coal plant burns 1.4 million tons of coal each year. As of 2012, there are 572 operational coal plants in the U.S. with an average capacity of 547 megawatts.

-The 2014 level of CO2 in the atmosphere was 43% above the level when the Industrial Revolution started in 1750.

-through the first half of 2016, including hydro-electric power, biomass, geothermal, wind, and solar (including distributed solar), provided 16.9 percent of electricity generation in the U.S.

The Many Alternatives

There are so many alternatives to the needless use of fossil fuels that it often leaves me wondering why we are using fossil fuels at all. Here is a list of just some of the many practically unlimited sources of energy.

-Nuclear

-Solar

-Geothermal

-Tidal

-Hydro-electric

-Atmospheric Pressure

-Biofuel

Most people have heard of most of these. However, atmospheric pressure and geothermal energy are fairly uncommon. I'll go into further detail explaining why these two energy sources are not only safe, but unlimited.


Atmospheric Pressure

Atmospheric pressure can be harnessed to pump water, and in turn create hydro electric power. This kind of mechanism may not be the best option for large scale applications, but is relatively inexpensive, completely safe, and very reliable on a small scale. One atmospheric pressure pump could create enough electricity to run all the appliances in an average household. And unlike solar or wind power, there is always going to be gravitational potential energy to harvest from the atmosphere.

Atmospheric pressure power is very affordable and creates absolutely no waste byproduct. It's free energy at its finest, only the fuels required to build and acquire materials are needed to begin running.

Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy can easily be scaled up to provide power to cities and large urban areas, the main benefit is that its reliable, efficient, and clean! Under the earths crust there is unimaginable heat coming from the magma of the earths upper mantle, harnessing this heat energy is an effective replacement for coal power plants. Geothermal energy generally involves low running costs since it saves 80% over fossil fuels and no fuel is used to generate the power. Since no fuel is required, costs for purchasing, transporting and cleaning up plants is quite low.

Geothermal energy the perfect alternative to the fossil fuels used to heat homes. This form of energy can also be transformed and delivered to a main grid just like coal, but without the nasty pollution and dangerous byproducts.

      Good point, we should be looking at ALL the different sources of renewable energy, not just photovoltaic and wind.
