Using Maps on the iPad

Updated on May 5, 2011

In this example we are going to use the Maps app on the iPad 2 to go to one of the most famous address in the United States, which is the White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC.

Step 1: After clicking on Maps from the Home Screen, type in the address in the search field. You will be taken to that location in the map with a red pin indicating the address location. The map data are from Google.

Step 2: You can zoom in by doing a pinch with your fingers on the map. You can zoom out, by expanding your fingers. You can pan in any direction by dragging your finger in the direction.

Step 3: If you tap on the blue information icon, you get additional information and options to get directions to and from this location (as shown below).

Step 4: If you tap on the map and hold your finger at another location on the map, it will drop a purple pin at that location.

Step 5: At many locations you get a thumbnail photo. If you tap on the thumbnail photo, you get a street view at that location...

You can navigate the street view using your fingers and return back to the map view by clicking on the lower right map icon.

Step 6: In the map view, you will notice a upturned corner on the lower right. If you drag that corner to the left as if to turn the page, you get the map options.

Step 7: By selecting the satellite view from the map options, you get ...

Step 8: And that terrain view looks like this ...

As you can see the Map application on the iPad is a very useful application that can let you explore different places virtually without actually having to go there.
