Grow your own musical instruments.

Musical Vegetables

In this lens I am going to show you a totally different recipe for using vegetables which involves absolutely no cooking whatsoever and everyone will love...even the children who don't like eating vegetables will certainly enjoy the veggies in my recipe.

My recipe for using vegetables is not as you might expect...these vegetables are not for cooking...nor will they get eaten.

You may well wonder at this point what it is that I am making with these vegetables if not food! The answer to that question is simple, my recipe is for making vegetable musical instruments...yes REALLY!

Making musical instrumets from vegetables and fruit is a fun and inventive way of teaching children about the different musical instruments which are widely used in today's world and about the healthy benefits attributed to vegetables & fruit.

All children love to make their own homemade instruments and then being able to play along to their favourite songs once they've finished making them. Adult supervision and help MUST be given during the making of all the vegetable musical instruments shoiwn on this lens AT ALL TIMES.

Within this lens I have added lots of videos showing the various musical instruments which can be made using various vegetables and fruit. All of the musical instruments shown on this lens can be made by following the step-by-step instructions which are contained in the first of the videos which this lens will show you. Simply follow the same basic instructions shown in the 1st video to create musical instruments out of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables...I have given you a handful of ideas to get you started on creating a vegetable and fruit orchestra and of course you can try many more vegetables and fruits to produce different sounds which I have left up to you as of course there is such a huge variety of vegetables and fruit available that I simply would not have room to list on this lens. Also remember that your vegetable orchestra can be created entirely out of just one vegetable such as a carrot orchgestra, simply use carrots of varying sizes as well as experimenting with the sizes and amount of holes...the choices for this project is endless, each choice you make will produce a different sound every time.

The musical instruments that I have put together for you include:

Carrot Flute

Cucumber Trumpet

Carrot Pan Flute

Cabbage Slide Flute

Japanese Butterbur Oboe

Apple Flute

Mushroom Flute

Broccoli Flute

There also happens to be an entire vegetable orchestra that makes their vegetable musical instruments immediately before each of their performances and when the performance is over they give the vegetable and fruit instruments to the audience to take home and eat.

Introduction video demonstrating how to make musical instruments from vegetables and fruits. - Young children should ALWAYS be supervised by a responsible adult

This introduction video for making musical instruments using vegetables and fruits such as carrots, cabbage, cucumber or apples explains and demonstrates which instruments work best with which vegetable and fruit....but the choice is of course entirely up to you. The instruments, vegetables and fruits shown on this lens are not limited to only those shown can create a new 5 course menu every day of the year which will be sure to tickle the musical taste buds of everyone.

The different sounds which can be produced from each type, size and variety of the vegetables and fruits listed on this lens is demonstrated within the introduction video and will help you to decide which vegetables and fruits you may want to use for creating your own orchestral delights.

Bon Appetite !

This video shows you how to make a musical instrument out of a carrot.

Vienna Vegetable Orchestra

The Vienna Vegetable Orchestra was founded in February 1998 and is based in Vienna, although it plays concerts around the world. The orchestra performs its music playing only on instruments made of vegetables such as carrot flutes, pumpkin basses, leek violins, cucumberophones and celery bongos.

After their performance they make a huge poy of soup with the vegetables and feed their audience with it

This is one of the most original topics I've come across lately! Vegetables are good for us but so is having fun -- makes sense to combine the two!

I think this is one of the most unusual and creative uses of vegetables ever! The animation of the music-maker made me smile. What a fun lens. :-)
