If you have been browsing Facebook lately, and popped over to visit any of the celebrity pages, you many have noticed the recent addition a little blue tick next to their name.

In fact, if you have a large following yourself, you may have woken up and found you have a tick too. If you do, this is a good thing.

Let me explain!

What do these blue ticks mean?

In an effort to crack down on fake profiles and fake identities, Facebook has launched an authenticity check.

Just like on Twitter, these blue ticks are used to identify verified celebrity profiles and other high-profile people, journalists, government officials and businesses with large followings. It appears along with a name in search results, and also on the Facebook timeline.

Can I Report A Fake Profile or Page?

It is worth mentioning however that not all authentic profiles and Pages will be verified so if you find a fake account impersonating you, or a profile impersonating someone you know, you can always report them.

How Can I Apply To Be Verified?

If you are deemed ‘worthy’ you too could be verified but before you get disappointed you can't actually 'request' one; it is the company itself which will decide if your worthy of a blue badge.

If you or someone you know has a page or profile that is not verified, there are ways to help your followers or the people that like your Page know that you are really you and that your identity is authentic.

For example, you can:

▪ Link to your Facebook profile or Page from your official website

▪ Update your About section of your profile or page to provide more information.

Will This Be The Answer To Success?

Page verification is definitely a step in the right direction but it does not mean it is your golden ticket to success.

Why?

  • Only Facebook chooses which pages and profiles are verified
  • It won't stop malicious people creating pages that are not who they say they are
  • It does not mean that you are going to go from 100 to 1,000,000 fans overnight
  • You still need to work on engagement

But if you do have it, flaunt it!

What Does Facebook Page Verification Mean for Your Brand?

For Brands and Businesses who are already verified, this can only mean good things. In fact it can mean great things.

Improved Brand Credibility
This is a great way to improve your credibility. There are so many copy-cats, scams and fakes on social media these days, having your followers, and new visitors know with certainty that you are who you say you are goes a long way.

Reclaim Lost Page Views And Fans
Duplicate pages and profiles could actually be costing you without you ever even knowing it. The fans of these 'fake' pages may not see the updates of these fake duplicate pages regularly enough to truly understand that it isn't the official page.

Those who go out of their way to create duplicate pages try their hardest to replicate all aspects including color schemes and logos.

Improved Social Presence
Now that we have graph search, verified pages will always appear first.

What Do The Blue Ticks On Twitter Mean?

Yes, these blue ticks can be seen on Twitter too...do you know what they mean?
