Meaning of a Computer

A computer can be defined as any electronic device that is programmable and that can accept data through an input device in such a manner that make it possible for processing(transform it) such data into a predetermined and acceptable form which can dispensed through an output device.

Computer is basically made up of two parts. These are the Computer hardware and the Computer software . The Computer hardware is the framework or the platform the software is built on .It is that tangible part of the computer that we can see for example the hard disk and floppy disk.

The Computer Software on the other hand can be described as the interface between the Computer hardware and the end user of the Computer System. It is a set of program written that enable the Computer System carry it task accurately and efficiently. The program consists of set of instructions that is executable and that tell the Computer to perform some specific task.

There are basically two types of Computer Software. These are System Software and Application Software. Examples of System Software are the operating System software such as MS- DOS, UNIX,XENIX etc. Examples of Application Software are Word Processing Software, Spreadsheet Application Software, Multimedia Software etc.

It suffices to say that the definition and uses of computer from the foregoing, calls for deep knowledge which may require training and retraining to gain full advantage of latest development in Computer technology, for self development and perhaps for corporate relevance.

Are you only informed on the peripherals and sometime find yourself inadequate? What did you really know about the Computer System and what advantage do you think you have far above the amateur? Please feel free to share your opinion below.

The Importance and uses of Computer

1. Storage: A Computer has proven to be the most potent and reliable means of storing data. Virtually all branches of human endeavour have lent credence to this assertion. The larger the volume of transaction of an enterprise the greater the need to create a medium through which all information and data required can be accessed within a reasonable frame of time. This is made possible via the use of Computer.

2. Speed: Modern day Computer also referred to as ‘’artificial intelligence’’ is capable of carrying out calculation or computation involving millions of data and figures in a matter of seconds.

3. Accuracy: A Computer is not only capable of carrying out large computations in a matter of seconds but also reputed for high level of accuracy and precision. If any error is discovered it would be as a result of human error in feeding the data to be calculated or computed. As long as the right application is employed, accuracy is the hallmark of the use of the Computer System.

4. Automation: Once the required instruction is passed on to the Computer, the System is capable of running on its own without human interference within the scope of that instruction.

5. Diligence and Continuity: The Computer if configured adequately and in a good working condition, it does not suffer from fatigue or tiredness like the humans. Hence one can always depend on it for maximum returns.

6.Teaching Aid: It serves as an instructional instrument in schools even from the cradle to adulthood. A computer can be programmed for self-learning or personal development.

Apart from the forgoing benefits of the uses of Computer for individual, government, Schools and corporate businesses, Computer today is a veritable source of income for majority of the World populace. Ranging from knowing how to administer repair and installation to data processing, desktop publishing etc. This have made a number of persons self reliance with great societal dividend.
