What is WhatsApp and why is it so popular?

Updated on August 25, 2013

What is WhatsApp?

WhatsApp is an application available on iOS (iPad and iPhone), Android, Blackberry and Nokia that allows users to send text messages to each other. Initially that does not sound very special, does it? That's because a few key features have been left out.

WhatsApp lets you send texts for free. Yes, 100% free. You will never be charged for a text sent through WhatsApp. This is because WhatsApp sends messages through an internet data connection. This is one reason that WhatsApp iPad is available; usually the iPad is not able to send text messages. However, with this application it is.

WhatsApp is cross platform. Regardless of whether you have WhatsApp installed on your iPad, Blackberry, Nokia or Android phone, you will be able to send messages to anybody who also has WhatsApp installed. This is one feature that allows it to be a step up from Blackberry Messenger - although BBM is a great service it is only good for people who have Blackberry phones.

WhatsApp supports many different message types, from simple text to pictures to audio files. Usually a MMS message would cost a fair bit of money to send (I got charged $0.40 for a picture message once!) so the fact that these can be sent to as many friends as you like for free is great.

Do you think free text messaging is a good thing?

"What Up" with all these people. Tons of better apps for messaging. Providers are now giving away texts for free unlimited anyway. What a waste on the poor public who bought Facebook shares, they heaps of spare cash to waste after that. - Oh hang-on.... Acton & Zuckerberg are friends :)))

What about any of the other instant messaging apps? They let you send messages for FREE too, and actually are free instead of WhatsApp that wants you to pay for subscription after trial period.

It is good. But really I think Nimbuzz is much much more better than this (and of course, not in battery).

I'm sorry, but I still don't uderstand why it's so popular inside countries like France, where texting (SMS / MMS) are now unlimited in mobile plans...

I know people why only use whatsapp to text between them, while their SMS / MMS are not charged !! could someone explain me why (apart from the « cousin living in NY / vacations as London / etc. » thing) ?
