Why I Think Wikipedia Is Amazing

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia at your feet...

Wikipedia is one of those sites that have changed the way we work with information. Cannot remember who The Who (excuse the pun) are, go to Wikipedia!

Need to know how Microsoft was founded? Go to Wikipedia!

Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia that many people around the world use. Sure, there are other encyclopedia's like The Living Webster's Encyclopedia in book form or the Encarta Encyclopedia on CD-ROM, but Wikipedia has more information than both of these and more.

There's Wikimedia Commons where you can find sounds, photos, videos and more of so many things like birds, nature, people and even inanimate objects. Wikiversity has university textbooks and materials useful to the college/university student. Wikiquotes has thousands of quotes from films, musicals and the like. Wikinews keeps you up to date with the latest news and events from around the globe.

You can have all of this from Wikipedia without leaving your chair (or bed in my case). It's resourceful and amazing. If I think about all the times its helped me with my schoolwork, wow I'd still be finding books for references for my projects if it wasn't for Wikipedia.

On the Wikipedia homepage, there's a section titled ''Did you know...?' which shows random facts about things I had no idea about. For instance, "Did you know that Homicide:Life on the Street episode "See No Evil" features a suspected police shooting, which was based on a real-life investigation from a book by David Simon?"
I for one did not know that!

Another block contains the words "On This Day.." which contains important events as such which happened on that particular day but the year varies. Sometimes what I've found there has made me wonder about other things like the day when scientists discovered the remains of two of the Romanov children. That led me to the Romanov family and then the individual people and then Rasputin and then Russia and so it continued. You go to look up one thing but find yourself wandering into a realm of knowledge.

So go off and discover for yourself the vast amount of information Wikipedia holds. It comes in many languages with thousands of articles in each. It could really use your support for donations as such and to contribute towards an article you hold information about.
