Wind Energy: Environment and space friendly

A separate branch of the alternate energy resources, wind is current irregularities that change accordingly to the earth, its shapes and ways, water and flora. It is a group of patterns that we can convert into actual electricity because of its constant kinetic energy. This energy is harnessed and transformed through a wind turbine, which are usually placed in locales where wind force is high, no matter the climate changes. Thanks to this innovation we have been able to power multiple sectors of our countries easily and quickly with wind turbines.

What is a Wind Turbine?

A wind turbine is the device used to “capture” the motion energy of the wind and start converting it into mechanical or electrical energy. It is a large mechanical windmill, composed of blades that convert the energy, a gearbox, and a tower, which is the main body. These types of windmills are usually called horizontal-axis windmills and are very big.

There are also vertical-axis windmills. These two types can also be divided into pole-mounted turbines, which stand erected in any good position, and building mounted that are installed on a roof or building that exposes them to the wind. In both cases though, the movement produced by the air currents on the propellers are what generates the electrical energy.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Wind energy and Wind Turbines

A set of wind turbines holds massive power and potential when it comes to producing electricity for large groups. Anywhere the wind hits for most of the day is a great place to put up a wind turbine. Yet, we always have to be careful of a sudden climate change that brings too much wind, or none at all.

The worse-case scenarios are as follows: either there is no wind, therefore no energy being produced by the wind turbines, or there is too much air, which produces a huge strain ion the propellers, and could break the turbine. A lot of care and attention comes into having a wind turbine, or several of them, producing power for you or your society. Constant check-ups, vigilance, propeller changes and whatnot, it can all discourage anyone from having a wind turbine and trying out this alternate energy.

Costs of a Turbine

The cost of a turbine varies on its power, size and way of mounting. If it is mounted on building it costs less than having them fully erected somewhere else. These prices usually include the installation too. A roof-mounted, or personal turbine, normally costs around $3,330, a 2.5kW pole-mounted costs around $11,000 and $21,000, and a kW pole-mounted costs from $24,000 to $33,000.

A wind turbine can start producing energy when the wind speed hits an average of 14 miles per hour, very common in high up places or close to the water. These machines have been around for years for work in farms like pumping water or grinding grain. One pole-mounted wind turbine alone can also power up more than 200 homes, making it a desirable source of energy really quickly. Countries have taken a lot of importance towards this renewable energy for some years now, developing new techniques and ideas as time and resources deplete drastically in the sense of having an oil-fueled future. The most outstanding countries in this area are as follows,

  • Spain in the lead with about 45% of its energy being produced by turbines and 53% of its population in favor.
  • The United States, with about 50% of its population in favor of having this change.
  • Italy, with 49%, trying to follow into Spain’s steps a bit earlier than expected.
  • Germany with a strong 40%, putting up wind turbines whenever possible.
  • The U.K., following with a good 38% and transitioning most of the ones opposed to a newer proposal of having most turbines in farms or secluded areas.
  • France going toe to toe with the U.K. with a 33%

The numbers of installed turbines went from a mere 10,000 per country to a whopping 60,000, getting China interested and going big into this too, becoming a top contender but not filling its country with this energy just yet. The transition is hard for all countries, especially with the idea of maintenance, what control the government would have and what would happen with the already established oil economy. Despite these rising worries, the project for all countries is growing strong, seeing every year with a huge increase in production of energy and installation of turbines.

What does The Future Look Like?

With the turbines in place and the wind farms becoming an actual investment and reality, our earth is bound to see improvement and welcomed changes. Money investments are being made annually, gradually increasing in size, and increasing with it the working force, amount of turbines, wind farms, and general population in favor of this energy.

Bills will be shortened and the only real cost in getting a turbine is installation and maintenance, which can be done by specialists or even you if you go through the training necessary to do so. Storing electricity will become a possibility, no longer fearing not having wind or a blackout. Electrical companies won’t have a finger on you and you will get paid for generating the electricity that you do.

There are new problems that we will face with these new turbines and wind farms, may it be death of animals because of flying into the blades, the noise they could produce, the cost to make and sustain a wind turbine and in time we will fix all of them. For now, we have to focus on making the leap, on continuing the production of this future.

Wind energy is bound to make huge breakthroughs in many more areas, powering bigger things, changing the industry that we know and making our world more hospitable and favorable for everyone and everything. We don’t have to trust in this, it isn’t about faith, it is simply the fact that it works, its renewable energy and we need it. Wind energy is going to be a part of our future, no matter if we want it, or are ready for it. It is here to stay and will continue growing into a more suitable and well-known industry and way of life.
