Why were windows 7 gadgets discontinued?

Gadgets, though not a necessity, were certainly a nice addition to the most used operating system users. With the introduction of the touch-screen version of their OS- windows 8, the software giant has announced the retirement of the windows 7(and vista) gadgets pertaining to the in-build vulnerabilities. The gadgets enhance the chances of potential attack. An attacker who successfully exploited a Gadget vulnerability could run arbitrary code in the context of the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker could take complete control of the affected system.

Additionally, the gadgets made it easier for an attacker to take over the administrative rights, if the administrator is logged into his system.

Microsoft has also come up with an automated fix which disables windows sidebar and gadgets in the 7 and vista systems.

Great list that covers many genres. One of my most recent favorites is the RealPlayer Cloud app too. Secure storage and makes video sharing a complete breeze. Huge time saver from converting formats. From their blog:

I think Wild West also deserved to be in the list.

      Good work though.
