Writing First C++ Program

Introduction.

  • C++ is a middle level language developed by Bjarne Stroustrup in 1983 at Bell labs.
  • It a multiplatform language and can run on mac, windows, and linux.
  • Many applications are developed in C++ due to its capability to resuse the code.
  • C++ is an Object Oriented Language.

Features of Object Oriented Language are:

  1. Encapsulation. Wrapping entire datatypes and variables in one unit of code called class.
  2. Inheritance. One class can inherit the properties of another class.
  3. Abstraction. Hiding unnecessary things and showing only important ones.
  4. Polymorphism. Ability of a single message to take different forms.

Writing your first program

An excellent way to understand the concepts of any programming language is by writing programs. All the concepts can be explained through a single program.

The first program to be written by a beginner is always a hello world program. Though very simple, it explains all the fundamental components in a C++ program.

The best way to learn any programming language is by writing a hello world program and understanding each and every component of it.

A basic Hello World Program

EXPLAINATION---

Line 1: #include<iostream.h>

# is known as preprocessor. They are written before the beginning of a program. Lines containing # are known as directives. The directive #include<iostream.h> tells the preprocessor # to include the code from a standard library known as iostream. h is called header file.

Line 2: #include<conio.h>

Similarly the directive #include<conio.h> tells the preprocessor # to include code from another c++ standard library conio.h.

Line 3. void main()

The void main is a function in C++. The beginning of all the the execution codes, all the logics takes place inside main. Without main, the program will not run and will result in an error.

Line 4: blank line

A blank has nothing to do with the execution of the program. Additionally, it provides clarity to the code.

Line 5 and 8: { }

"{" marks the beginning of main function and "}" marks the ending of main function. These are known as braces. All the codes are written inside them. These braces are also known as block of codes.

Line 6: cout<<"HELLO WORLD!";

cout stands for character output. It tells what will be shown on the screen. "<<" is known as insertion operator. Whatever is written after << , goes to cout and hence printed to screen. " " are the quotes inside which whatever is written will be printed to screen as it is. At the end, we use semicolon ; It is used to mark the end of line.

Line 7: getch();

getch stands for get character. It is used to hold the output on the screen.

  1. Comments: comments are used to explain what is done in the program.

Line comments:

Block comments:

The comments are not displayed in the program. They just provide good explaination to wghat is written.
