I have tried many versions of XP downloaded fron internet but they all fail and I know hard drive is working fine

You'll have to take it to a computer repair person, or buy a disc from someone.

Turn on the laptop, as laptops flame, press F2 or Delete or Esc, to enter bios. Change the BIOS settings on the hard drive, from AHCI to IDE. then save settings and exit the Bios.
IDE = if OS Win XP
AHCI = if OS Win Vista and Win7
Try repeating the installation process. Good luck
I thinks there will be a Recovery partition on that one, Do a Factory Restore using that partition.
What is the issue you are having with the windows XP discs that you downloaded? Did you burn them as images or raw data? I can definitely walk you through it, but I need a little bit more context.
