Will bio-electrical, bio-mechanical and medical nano-technology turn us into the "The Borg?"

Remember Star Trek - Next Generation, where we are introduce to a collective civilization called the Borg, who have augmented physiology through technology. In the TV series and movies this was not a good thing. Yet in other science fiction it is not only a good thing, but an eventual event for mankind as part of evolution and journeys out into space for exploration and colonization. And today, we have the beginnings of the technology to turn us into this 'collective". Or is it just science fiction?
