Avira all the way. Avast is also good but I had several bad experience about it deleting system files and entirely corruption my OS. Kaspersky Internet Security is also a good option but only for computers with remarkable processing speed.
With my alienware M18X I use Kaspersky so far it has been the best.
Best one I've ever had, by far, and with zero problems, has been PC Tools Spyware Doctor with Antivirus
of course, it is ESET NOD 32. It is fast, simple, light and protect your PC with a maximum protection. I used to install Kaspersky, Norton, Vipre, Avira, Avg, avast in my computer and I find ESET NOD 32 is better than all the antivirus that i mention earlier.
I recommend you try Unthreat Antivirus, it's a free antivirus that's light on the system and really easy to use. I've had it for a while and I like that it doesn't slow down my computer while scanning it so I can do other stuff while it's working. I totally recommend it!
I personally use the free edition of AVG anti-virus as well as Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. AVG does a very good job of keeping the computer free of viruses. In the unlikely event that something nasty does get onto your computer, all you have to do is run Malwarebytes and your computer is as good as new. The best part is this set up is completely free. I have found the software that requires purchase to do the exact same job. The downside to pay-to-use software is that it usually only comes with a one year subscription and if you don't re-purchase after the year, the virus protection software actually becomes just as annoying as any virus!
