I live in Louisiana. We get frequent hurricanes and we lose electricity. However, most of the land-line telephone service continues (most of the telephone lines are now underground). Secondly, if cell towers are knocked out of commission or you cannot recharge your battery, then the cellphone makes a good paperweight.
Finally, the quality of the sound on the landline telephones is better than any cell phone I have used.
One word of warning. I have a landline phone with three extensions, but the main unit has to be plugged into an outlet, so when the power goes out, it does not work. That is why I have an old slimline type telephone that uses no batteries that I plug in and worked even during Katrina and Rita.
