Why would a CD break into pieces inside a drive?

The other day I was making a copy of one of my CDs, it started copying before I heard a bursting sound. On checking, the CD had broken into smithereens. Any logic behind that? Have you ever experienced such a thing?

It is a horrifying experience and a bad one if you do not have a another CD. It is possible to have a problem of misalignment.

I agree with you it could also be a problem (defect) with the CD, just waiting for the right time to burst into pieces.
