You don't want to be spending much time backlinking these days. Backlinking to wind up high in search engine results pages doesn't work anymore - unless someone else is doing that backlinking for you, and the backlinking doesn't seem to be unnatural in any way.
Google is smarter now than it was five years ago - they will penalize your work if you are spraying backlinks all over the web.
What I think is important is that you have a Google Plus account, and you have that synced with your Hubpages - i.e., so Google knows you are the person who writes the Hubpages (or any other website's pages) that you link and share on your Google Plus account.
What the people at Hubpages were saying six years ago is more true now than it was then - that the backlinks that matter are the ones that someone else creates because they found your published page to be so damned good. So don't bother backlinking much, bother with making your pages damned good, or don't make them at all.
