I agree with 2uesday....Wind turbines have inherent problems and are really only one piece of the energy crisis. For instance, a "mini wind turbine" as you have stated is usually referred to as a micro wind turbine and are usually used on residential buildings....they will only produce enough energy to reduce your electric bill..not take you off of the grid (assuming the wind is blowing regularly). The average energy output of a micro wind turbine is between 500-1000 watts. Thats not going to make much of a difference unless you pair it with a 4 kW solar array ( that was my attempt at a joke). The average home uses about 1600 kWh per month...i think you can do the math there? The next step up from micro wind turbines would be considered in the 2 kW range and are often used in residential, commercial and urban areas but again...the rated output can only be obtained at maximum efficiency. Also, most turbines no matter how big or small must shut down in winds over 35 mph in order to self protect and require a certain amount of wind (usually around 10-15 mph) before they start producing power...which means just because it's spinning DOES NOT mean it is producing meaningful power. Oh...one more thing...the rising cost of the raw materials have risen dramatically over the last five years (copper, magnets, steel, etc.) which causes higher manufacturing prices that are passed on to the consumer who is already cash strapped in these times and without rebates and tax incentives, it makes most turbines unattainable during a recession. Of course ...this is all just my humble opinion :0)...great question!!!!
