Well Iggy, your question peeked my interest and Keith's answer would have been my "guess." To be sure, I did a search. In at least 4 different sites, it's clear that the number of H R operators is alive and well and actually growing. In fact, the word used was, it's "soaring!" Here's a snippet from just one article:
"Amateur Radio growth in the US continues to soar. At the end of 2014, the total number of radio amateurs in the FCC’s Universal Licensing System (ULS) database reached an all-time high of 726,275."
