Well, I do both. If I am on hubpages I may look for something I need to find out and I also use Google if I can not find enough here or if I want another source.
Most people around the world including me search google for advice or to get help in solving any problems or getting to know the answer to any questions. Some people also search google for treating their medical problems, for example, finding natural remedies for treating heartburn and they get a lot content to read.
Now talking about me, I am a quality analyst or you can say a senior proofreader in a medical transcription company and whenever I do google search for finding some complex English and Medical words, I find at least one hubpages hub around 25% of time in the first page of my search results so I click on the hub to read its content.
Why I do so? One simple reason: It is up in the search results just because it is useful or it would not have shown up there.
Interesting, this is the rule which every google searcher follows.
I have found that I mainly use google search to find information on a topic that I want to know more about, also I like to read university journals and research papers for authority type content that will help me find the best answer.
Interestingly enough I have found some of the best advice on answers.com and similar sites where a question was asked and then I read the answers to find out more about the topic which I have found to be very useful.
I usually search google first.. if unsatisfied, i search yahoo. even then if i am satisfied, i go to hubpages and squidoo.. the searches of the latter two are not so good.. most of the times the best hubs are numbered far away on the list.
Good question. I actually just started using hubpages a little more to search for whatever I need. I used google all the time but if the answer is on here I might as well help someone with a view and a comment
google I usuallyl don't get what I need on hubpages. I believe the search tool on hubpages isn't very accurate so I go with google.
Oftentimes I used it for it some references and in the time I encountered unfamiliar things, words or places.

Today we're changing the internal search engine on HubPages to run Google Custom Search. The new search feature should not...

I just read a Hub that said that the author was going to go to the freelance website and pay people to write articles for him that he would put on HubPages to make himself money from. That can't be okay with the HubPages site, is it? A couple of people commented, including an author that I have...
