App Wars – Force Wakens

Updated on December 21, 2015

“Thirty years after defeating the Galactic Empire, Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and his allies face a new threat from the evil Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and his army of Stormtroopers.” Source: IMDb

…and we all have read this line over and again just to try and get a hint of the storyline, haven’t we?

George Lucas released the newest edition to the Star Wars saga, and the first reactions from the audience are overwhelming, suggesting it to be the biggest blockbuster ever in the history of Hollywood.

As you might have noticed, the title of the blog is not Star Wars – Force Awakens, but App Wars – Force Wakens. And as you might have guessed by now (and yes! you are right…), this blog is about App Wars in Applactic Empire of Apps better known to us as Mobile Stores – with army of Droids and Stormtroopers fighting to keep their force stronger. And without any exception, the Dark Side is more seductive than ever with infinite army of Stormtroopers, pulling the rankings of your app down. But nothing to worry about, because you are the commander of the Droid army, limited in number they might be, if used strategically, are sufficient to send Stormtroopers back to the dark side of the Dark Side of the Force.

There is nothing to worry about, the Dark Side might be prevailing, but you have Jedi Masters to guide you through this war.

Get started, we must.

“Do, or do not. There is no try.” – Yoda

If you have created an app, then you are an app creator, and there is nothing you can do to deny this. It is your sole (and soul too) responsibility to take care of your creation, and help it rank better. All you have to do is place your Droid army at places where Stormtroopers are expected to attack frequently.

This type of defense is called ASO (App Store Optimisation).

App Title

Keywords in app title are of the most important relevance signals. Though, it is still unknown if they are direct signals (keywords directly affecting rankings), or analogous (keywords resulting in click-through rates).

App Description

This is an open battlefield, so feel free to place as many keywords as you like over here. But remember, the army is only as good as the quality of the troops, so pick your keywords carefully.

Keywords Data

A good strategy of the old, but it appears that Apple has already started to shoot it down. So avoid investing on this front, as it is expected to phase out soon.

“Always remember, your focus determines your reality.” – Qui-Gon Jinn

Words of wisdom by the great Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn hold true still. All you have to do is put your focus on the right things, and it will determine into reality. To help you focus in the right areas, here are a few tools.

MobileDevHQ - Let’s say you have read all the ASO literature and still want to check on your work, MobileDevHQ might prove to be a perfect package for you. It not only provides suggestions on keywords, but also help you remove duplicates.

Sensor Tower - Of all the ranking tools, Sensor Tower is the most accurate out there. How do we know this? Because we have spot checked manually, and the numbers align perfectly! In addition, it also provides approximate figures for traffic, keyword difficulty, and number of apps listed in addition to rankings.

AppAnnie - Adding on to its great informational bank, AppAnnie released a full suite of analytics for Amazon – the up and coming contender in Mobile Store game.

“You must unlearn what you have learned.” – Yoda

Digital is crazy, and ever evolving. So it is imperative that you keep an eye for any algorithmic changes, unlearn what you have learned, and always be ready to learn new and better ways to adapt to the changes.

“UuuuuuuuurAhhhhrrrrrrUhrrrrAhhhhrrrrrr…” - Chewbacca

Perhaps the most common quote from the movie said the famous Wookie, Chewbacca, it just says it all. There will be times when things will not work out, but be patient, then yell, and get started on the task again.

So, sit back, relax, watch Star Wars – Force Awakens, and get back to working on your app ranking.

May the Force be with you!
