Vuze vs uTorrent

Updated on September 14, 2014

Vuze and uTorrent Comparison

There are two freeware BitTorrent clients that really stand out from the crowd: uTorrent and Azureus (now known as Vuze). Since these are the most popular ones, it's only natural that a lot of people argue about which one is a better torrent downloader: Azureus or uTorrent? Both of them have their pros and cons, some of which are listed below.

Both clients, however, are fully capable of creating, downloading and seeding .torrent files, as well as doing a lot of smart and advanced things like automatically downloading from RSS feeds, using multiple trackers, banning specific IP addresses, or setting download priorities for each file inside the torrent separately. You probably can't go wrong whichever one you choose for your torrenting.

Vuze (Azureus) Overview

Vuze compared to uTorrent

Azureus is a powerful open source BitTorrent client with a huge amount of features and support for 3rd party plugins. For several years now it has been known as Vuze instead - a P2P (peer-to-peer) network of high quality video content - but you are still able to use the classic Azureus interface if you want to.

Vuze requires Java Runtime Environment (JRE). This is good because it can run on any operating system that supports JRE, and it is bad because Java-based Azureus client uses quite a lot of system resources. Many people say that Vuze downloads faster than uTorrent, but tests have been conflicting so far and there's no definite conclusion.

Vuze recently released a new torrent client called Vuze Leap. Compared to their original app, it uses a lot less resources and features an extremely simple GUI. It might appeal to people who found the original Vuze too bloated and slow.

uTorrent overview

uTorrent compared to Azureus

uTorrent is a lightweight and efficient torrent downloader. It is closed source, which Azureus fans are quick to point out as a big flaw (it is theoretically possible for the uTorrent developers to add anything they want to the program, such as DRM protection, or copyright breach reporting, without the users' knowledge). There's also no plugin support, and it has less features than Vuze (but still more than you will probably ever need). The latest version has some ads running, which fortunately can be disabled through options.

Unlike Vuze client, uTorrent is not Java-based. This is good because uTorrent is really small, fast, and uses very little CPU and RAM. However, it also means that a separate version has to be developed for every platform. uTorrent now has Mac support, and an early Linux version is in development. There is no doubt that uTorrent is faster than Azureus when it comes to the program itself; on the other hand, various Azureus and uTorrent speed comparison tests have shown different results, so it's not clear which torrent client can produce higher download speeds.

What is the Best BitTorrent Client?

uTorrent or Vuze (Azureus), which one is a better (faster, safer...) BitTorrent client?

Vuze is better than uTorrent!

i used u torrent and got up to 1mb highest but when i used vuse i got up to 2.18mb tops and i use an ancient laptop like poopy so i say vuse

Love the auto speed on Vuze, I can use the internet on other computers and vuze will automagicaly throttle itself giving back some bandwidth and ping speed for regular browsing etc.

Unless you have a pre-2010 computer that costs $100, use Vuze. Vuze uses more ram but if you have 4GB you'll be fine. I'm currently download CoDBo @ 2.5MB/s while playing Skyrim on Ultra with 20 mods- both are running flawlessly.

Vuze has loads of features and lets me stream my downloaded music and videos straight to my Xbox, which is really cool and convenient. It's also ad free!

Now this poll should define if this is the view of people who SEED unique content or Seed in general or if they just download. I personally have not used uTorrent - I use Vuze - it's bloated but it's got all the features and controls a father could need. I seed torrents, rarely download so Vuze and Azeurus are a perfect fit . By the way - Azeurus works on my laptop from 1999 - pismo g3 - flawlessly. Can uTorrent claim backward compatibility? I know most people don't seed - they only hunt for a fix - so really any torrent client will do.

Ended my over 5 year relationship with Vuze today.

Long story short, I got annoying, pesky malware from installing Vuze THREE times. Search conduit, spigot, rocket tab... my anti anti programs couldn't detect them, they were installed WITHOUT my permission, and with vuze :/ I trusted them.

Finally found Vuze as the culprit when I ran HitmanPro and detected "Azureus" as a threat. Googled it and found very recent reports of the same malware issues.

Trying out utorrent now. We'll see how it goes.

    • anonymous 2 years ago

      Vuze.

    • anonymous 3 years ago

Vuze is Ad-Free, has a lot more featurs (you might not use them a lot or never, but if you do some of them are very handy). I've seen many problems with uTorrent but I've never had any with Vuze.

    • anonymous 3 years ago

      Vuze is the man

    • anonymous 3 years ago

Azureus is better. Look at Utorrent and the invasive advertising. Look at how it finally made it into updating. Look at how easy it is to implement hijacking through utorrent because of the forced back doors. Oh wait.. you didn't know about them.

Switching to Azuerus second Utorrent started advertising and supporting ads, and increasing the "backdoor" ability to hijack a remote system through the program.

If you dont got the ram, and cpu power to handle azuerus then go with utorrent, just beforewarned viruses, malware, and datamining software does automatically go to the client which can result in a breach of security. If your willing to take the risks for a "closed source" project for a smaller install and "fast start up" which is only a few seconds faster depending on your cpu and ram, well then.. that's on you.

    • anonymous 3 years ago

      Its faster

    • anonymous 3 years ago

      I would say Vuze :)

      Vuze is boss

    • anonymous 3 years ago

      Vuze rulz!

    • anonymous 3 years ago

When I used uTorrent, the ip of my peers that I connected to were things that (seems like) anti-p2p servers i.e. "metrovpn, iliad entreprises, road runner commercial, globe telecom..." so on and so forth. This concerned me, so I switched over to Vuze, when doing so, I encountered similar Ips again, BUT, this time, Vuze banned them outside so I wouldn't connect and made it quite obvious to me. No DRM protection notice for me (yet) I only wish Vuze updated automatically more often (of course you can manually force update).

    • anonymous 3 years ago

May not be to lightweight, but it's definitely the best when it comes to features and speed.

      i need help

from last two month vuze gives me 8 to 11 mbps downloading speed but now i am amazed how it could be slow.

      VUZE!

    • anonymous 3 years ago

Does it really matter on which program is faster? Is it not what your ISP supports? In my area in Cali,. it is an average of 3MBps or as advertised 25Mbps...

The only reason I had to pick is I currently use Vuze and have no time on uTorrent..

    • anonymous 3 years ago

Vuze. Expect if you got old pc. Anyway, i usually download when im asleep or don't using computer so it dosent matter much.

Nowadays Azureus is succeeding somewhere that utorrent isn't. Every single time when Im waiting on utorrent, I switch over to azureus apply same torrents, and it handles biz like a champ just powering out my shite like a boss.

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I've just had a better experience with vuze. It also works great on macs!

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I can't believe that. I had been trying to download 350 mb file for 2 days with utorrent. It never exceeded 10 kb download speed. I installed Vuze(old Azureus) and it downloaded with 120 kb on average in nearly 30 minutes!

    • anonymous 4 years ago

open source, enough said, only reason to use utorrent instead is if you have an ass old computer and don't mind using a torrent client packed with spywares

    • anonymous 4 years ago

      lawl

    • anonymous 4 years ago

      vuze

    • anonymous 4 years ago

Azureus, has a lot of features which I actually which are missing in utorrent. It's true it eats too much memory but ever since I upgraded my rig to something more standard for nowadays it's no longer a problem at all.

But most importantly it is open source, you should never trust an application with internet access to anything which isn't fully open source.

    • anonymous 4 years ago

It downloads files faster than utorrent

    • anonymous 4 years ago

      Vuze

    • anonymous 4 years ago

Fast in terms of running : uTorrent

Fast in terms of download speed : Vuze

The faq that vuze support major operating system

means there are lots of seeders

    • anonymous 4 years ago

Azureus is faster and full featured

    • anonymous 4 years ago

i actually tried on both client but from my observations vuze seems to track sources much faster than utorrent. additionally, vuze have nicer ui and download at a blazing speed. one test downloaded a linux distro (chrome) on a vuze took me 8 mins vs the utorrent for 9-10 mins.

but conclusion, its your pick for which client you'd prefer. happy torrenting :)

    • anonymous 4 years ago

Vuze is totally better than 'Utorrent' in speed and connectivity....I asked my friend to download 'Utorrent' and I download Vuze and we will download a game we both like.....Vuze won by 2 whole days of downloading and 'Utorrent' lost by 4 extra days ....And i do admit that sometimes the download goes so fast is because it takes the whole internet connection, every last drop of it....Proven, Vuze is better and with all the apps too...Makes it very fun...Thank You

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I've been using Vuze for a long time and it hasn't produced any problems for me yet

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I say Azureus. It has a lot of features that make it very useful, and the community is more involved in determining improvements for it.

uTorrent is good if you're doing things that are intensive on your computer while downloading, and want to use less processing and memory, but the difference in memory usage is negligible compared to the total memory most computers will have.

    • anonymous 4 years ago

Vuze is the most powerful and complete BitTorrent client in the web in my opinion, though it requires a little bit of RAM and CPU power.

    • anonymous 4 years ago

      no

    • anonymous 4 years ago

i have both... an used both for quitte a long time..but just from my experiences Vuze is indeed allot heavier then Utorrent.BUT also allot faster!! i recommend Vuze

    • anonymous 4 years ago

      vuze is best

    • anonymous 4 years ago

He have more advanced features than utorrent, and they add new tecnologies as soon as possible, so its always use the cutting edge tec :), and i thinkthat the most important its that i liked it.

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I am not a heavy user re torrents but I have used Vuze and previous incarnations for years and it seems to work well...however, I tried utorrent this morning and then spend about 2 hours getting rid of the toolbars, homepage etc. installed without my consent...I hate utorrent now.

    • anonymous 4 years ago

if you have to share your connection with others, go for vuze. I HAVE to choke at 60kbs to 80kbs upload. with utorrent, and a completed file, the file will seed back WAY less than choke limit. with no choke upload speed, then it goes 190kbs and higher. Vuze doesn't do this

    • anonymous 4 years ago

i keep gettin random results when i type what i am looking for in vuze, it's really frustrating cause they don't have absolutely nothing to do with my search, like for example i was looking for two and a half men s03e01 and the results i get are things like : dirty old men and other random stuff, why is that?

    • anonymous 4 years ago

I've noticed a clear difference in speed with Vuze vs uTorrent on the Mac. Because of the programming in Vuze where you have the option multiple connections from the same IP you can download faster. Granted the tracker probably has to support this. But when downloading with uTorrent I noticed it downloaded significantly slower.

    • anonymous 4 years ago

Even utorrent users hate it i see lt looks like Vuze wins

      • anonymous 2 years ago

Vuse DOES have some advertising now, and you can disable utorrent ads. Utorrent also doesn't run slow or crash as much as java and vuze.

      • anonymous 2 years ago

        no more.

Used Azureus back in the day and then switched to uTorrent.. Thinking about trying Vuze again because I've heard the features are nice... We'll see who wins...

      • anonymous 3 years ago

The Vuze UI is kinda poopy.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

Utorrent 2.2 and under is best.. otherwise.. use Vuse.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

uTorrent is lightweight and stable and available for PC and Mac, it supports DHT (allows accessing to torrents after tracker goes down) same as Azureus. Sure Azureus has a private version of DHT as well, giving it a wider audience technically. That's probably why it's download is faster. But overall, I say uTorrent.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

utorrent is light, fast and efficient it also allows a lot of customizing and you can arrange your torrenter as you like.

And for the DL/UL speeds, it only depends on your personal connection to the web and the software blocking/enhancing your connection. A proxy will slow it down, and a cool piece of software on your router will make your speed higher for example it has (nearly) nothing to do with the torrenting software. If you want to keep it lightweight, fast and efficient go qtorrent, if you want (useless) open-source and a load of plugins that you will never need and less performance go with Azures.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

I use Vuze, but uTorrent is best just because it's lightweight!

      • anonymous 4 years ago

        uto

        utorrent

      • anonymous 4 years ago

Utorrent is free and very reliable with updates

      • anonymous 4 years ago

If the end result is that you'll be sitting in the dark watching a movie, it sure won't matter how you dress up for it. uTorrent gets you the movie in ripped jeans and a comfortable shirt. Azureus/Vuze gets you the same movie dressed as a glamor queen plus the extra time and effort to put its makeup on. I' just wanna see the movie.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

Utorrent is faster and is not quite heavy for your machine. Easy to control the bandwidth allocation, find already downloaded stuff, lots of live reporting about the current transferred files, etc. Really a powerful app in return for the tiny file it is and low memory it uses.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

        Java based software, no thanks.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

Been using Azureus/vuze almost since it came out. But now that my trusty computer can't handle the burden of having to run vuze and wow, and literally shuts down. I'll be trying out utorrent. Downloads are not priority for me, so perhaps utorrent is better choice

      • anonymous 4 years ago

uTorrent is Definitely faster, and more lightweight but its not the safest.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

Have been using utorrent for years. No problems. Extremely efficient and it has tiny footprint.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

        The lightweight prevails!

      • anonymous 4 years ago

        ye

      • anonymous 4 years ago

Vuze s to hard on Cpu, if it was as light as utorrent i would've choosed vuze

      • anonymous 4 years ago

        u torrent

      • anonymous 4 years ago

        utorrent is best

      • anonymous 4 years ago

Vuze isn't half bad, I gotta say, but Vuze's advanced features gobble up the CPU (thanks to JRE), which is not really worth it. Hell, the main thing I'd expect are (1) speed, (2) light footprint, (3) features, and in that order. uTorrent runs super fast, and since I have no intention to shift away from Windows, I'd stick with UT.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

well the main purpose of using both of them was to download files, and vuze has low download speed than utorrent , if speaking of features. i believe both of them have plenty of features nd i sure more than 90% of users don't even know about them or used them in both cases. So as far as downloading nd uploading is concerned "utorrent" is champ :p

      • anonymous 4 years ago

I'm new to the bittorrent site, but uTorrent hasn't disappointed me yet. It's small, fast, and allows me to continue performing tasks while downloading.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

Azureus is fast but it takes much computer resources than utorrent, so i will choose utorrent. Fast, small size, little mem concuption, etc

      • anonymous 4 years ago

        uTorrent FTW!

      • anonymous 4 years ago

i have seen vuze and i liked the gui. but it wants Java. that's why i don't use it. i also play minecraft and when i'm playing it i have open only the game and the skype.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

        UTORRENT

      • anonymous 4 years ago

uTorrent is better overall because it doesn't use so much cpu an ram.

ps. used it for years and tested azureus.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

        uTorrent is the best!

      • anonymous 4 years ago

        uTorrent. Very light weight application.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

Utorrent 2.21 is the best, 3.0 and above is becoming more and more bloated and using more resources. So, i use Utorrent 2.21. Bandwidth allocation is great, you can set columns for any piece of info you want about each torrent... How can you go wrong?

      • anonymous 4 years ago

uTorrent is better because there is a lot more you can do on it, it is faster loading up and i found that on both my computers that Vuze takes a while to FULLY exit and makes my net laggy for another 20 seconds.

      • anonymous 4 years ago

From this I think that the smaller file size is the only thing that stands out since I know I'll always use a platform that plays nice with uTorrent

      • anonymous 4 years ago

      • anonymous 4 years ago

given tahgt i also need to do other things while im downloading stuff obviously is better utorrent, a can't imagine a person that really use all the feautures in azureus besides it also have a lot of nonsense things like this other application they offer raptor wich is les ussful that the azareus itself so in sum of all of that i prefer utorrent because i can still do other things while im still downloading .

      • anonymous 4 years ago

Uh, not sure what y'all are talking about, but μTorrent does show you your ratio, and allow you to adjust trackers, and limit the bandwidth it's using (based on your ping), and tweak your form of encryption, and most of that other stuff you're saying. Not to mention if you're really desperate for all that extra crap (not sure why...) μTorrent even has addons that lets you do that now.

      • anonymous 5 years ago

I have a Pony icon for uTorrent. Vuse has a frog. No relation. ALso I own a mac, and uTorrent takes care of all my needs. It always seeds so I have a soul, but I'm new to Bittorrent clients. Take what I said with a grain of salt, but Ponies, like all other decisions in life since 2010 have made this one for me.

      • anonymous 5 years ago

I have it running 24/7 so low footprint is of utmost importance for me. utorrent in this case.

I've always used utorrent and mostly reach max speed for either upload as download, according to the max speed my ISP has to provide me (and it usually does so according to some independed speedtests). If I don't reach max speed it's b/c there aint enough seeders or leechers, or they don't have high upload speed. Utorrent is effective for me (for downloading torrents and upload them for 150%) and when utorrent is minimized in the system tray I hardly notice it. Otherwise I'll lower bandwith allocation.

've used been using torrents for ~decade and have always used a version of utorrent. Recently vuze has been recommended so I've decided to try it. Migrating ~100 torrents was a total pita (by the way for some reason Vuze flagged some files as failing hash even thought the checked out in utorrent and I've tested files myself as good) but I've finally manged to do it as well as tweak its 9999999 options and turn off all the stuff that imo should not be in a torrent client players/dvd burners/media server/etc. Anyway after running it for 2 days here are the issues I've encountered so far

          1. Vuze does not want to quit out after running for a few hours and I have to terminate azerus.exe through task manager which in turn causes it to recheck the unfinished torrents on next start - total pita

          2. Vuze does not download some torrents (that download fine in utorrent I've checked) giving Error: NullPointerException.

          3. Large single torrents with file sizes over 30 gigs seem to be very glitchy aka crushing the client while loading

          4. All in all it seems to glitch/crash a hell of a lot for a torrent client also use immensely more RAM which I don't really care about but still.

back to the utorrent for me. I much rather use a program that does not include random glitches.

uTorrent>Vuze. my friend has vuze and he has problems on and off. utorrent is so much stable, and quicker to open and run. speed of download depends on the peers and seeders, not the client. your internet also limits it.

Just tried to download same torrent with vuze and utorrent. Utorrent was about 10 times faster. Plus I have noticed when I use Vuze the entire broadband connection slows down dramatically, including on other computers from same network.

And for Vuze to not destroy your harddrive you need memory buffer + java's memory buffer for vuze's memory buffer = a lot of memory to run a network client ?

P.S. Under active i don't mean torrents with status "seeding" but torrents with actual transfer.

uTorrent is like stale crackers in an old chili. you wouldn't want to dump a bunch of that STUFF down your drain!

Of course uTorrent is better. Firstly it takes seconds to start up, Vuze takes the best part of 30 seconds. Secondly, without trillions of useless config options, such as what colour you want the download bars, uTorrent has a small footprint and thus runs faster. Thirdly (not lastly either), uTorrent actually downloads magnet links, unlike Vuze which has refused to work properly since it became Vuze instead of Azereus.

i have been using both clients for some time and i want to share my experiences.

          Utorrent

          - very lightweight "using very little system resource"

          - average 10k - 50k memory used even downloading multiple torrents

          Vuze

          - can slow system down because its java based and can crash java sometimes

          - use more system resource when downloading multiple torrents/files

          - 50k - 150k based on usage

to those who "got a virus", "system crashed" , "computer hang" etc etc....only vuze can slow, crash or hang a computer since its java based. you can only get virus when downloading bad files. its not the softwares fault, its the users fault for downloading a virus, so don't be a fool

          ABOUT DOWNLOADING SPEED

          - software is not to blame. blame your connection for being slow and undependable. and a download speed is as fast as the seeders and how many are seeding the files.

Vuze is ok as long as you are not using your pc while your downloading as it uses up a lot of resources, utorrent on the other hand is lightweight, a little slower downlloading but not by any signifant amount uses much less resources but not as customisable for me I prefer utorrent as I don't use any of the plugins that vuze has but still a good program

Vuze is always better than utorrent in terms of speed..

Most people look for speed, simplicity and light-weight download. uTorrents offers that and I guess most people are satisfied with it.

Vuze is open source and has a few more features than uTorrents (I heard). It is attractive, since a person like me would have an opportunity to dig into its code :)

So I compare them from different level. As a normal user, I prefer uTorrent. As a developer or as person seeking extra options, Vuze would give me that.

utorrent is my choice. maybe vuze has built with advanced for searching torrents, downloading, receiving updates etc. but u torrent is one user friendly. thanks for this comparison.
