Updated on April 19, 2013

Big 4K TVs for 2013

A guide to the best 4K TVs for 2013. These ultra HD television sets are big and very high resolution. Several manufacturers have announced or previewed 4K TVs.

In 2013 we'll be seeing 4K TVs for home cinema enthusiasts and those who love to be the first to have new tech gadgets. 4K TVs have been demonstrated by Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, LG and Toshiba.

4K TVs have been available in Japan for a while and are starting to appear in Europe and the US.

On this page we'll be keeping an eye on the best 4K TVs as they are announced and become available to buy.

You may also want to look at OLED TVs.

What is 4K TV Resolution?

4K refers to resolutions of around 4000 pixels horizontally across the screen. For comparison 1080p HD is 1920 pixels horizontally. 4K has roughly four times the resolution of 1080p.

This means that 4K HD looks good on large screens with users seated fairly close to the screen, as in a typical living room.

The term Ultra HD is also used to refer to 4K (and higher) resolutions.

LG Electronics 84LM9600 84-Inch Cinema 3D Ultra High Definition 240Hz LED-LCD HDTV with Smart TV and Six Pairs of 3D Glasses

The LG 84LM9600 is an 84" 4K Ultra HD TV which now has some limited availability in the US.

LG is one of the first companies to bring an Ultra HD TV to the US market. This is a Smart TV and also has Cinema 3D - as you might expect for such a luxury purchase.

Smaller 55 and 65in screen sizes have also been announced.

Samsung 4K TV 85" - UN85S9

The Samsung UN 85 S9 is an 85" 4K TV due for release in the US in March 2013. This TV comes with an integrated TV stand.

Sony 4K 84" Ultra HD TV - XBR-84X900

The Sony XBR-84X900 is an 84" 4K Ultra HD TV which is starting to appear in Sony stores.

Why are 4K TVs so big?

We're seeing 4K TVs of 84" and 85" which is around 7 feet across the diagonal. Imagine a very tall person diagonally across a TV to get an idea of the scale.

Many people want to recreate an immersive theater-like experience at home and this needs a big screen viewed fairly close up. But with regular HD you can see the pixels at close range on a large screen. The new 4K TVs solve this problem by supporting a higher resolution at larger screen sizes.

Sony Bravia X9000A 4K TV

We are going to see smaller 4K TVs too. The Sony Bravia X9000A 4K TV has 55in and 65in models. Still big enough to appreciate 4K content, or upscaled content, but more people will have room for a TV this size.

These models are expected in summer 2013.

Toshiba 4K TV - 84", 65", 58" - L9300

Toshiba has announced the L9300 series of 4K TVs which includes a huge 84" TV and also smaller 58" and 65" models. The Toshiba 4K TVs are expected to ship in summer 2013.

HiSense 4K TVs - XT880

HiSense is a Chinese manufacturer and is a popular TV brand in China. HiSense have 4K TVs in a wide range of sizes from an affordable 50" up to a massive 110". HiSense XT880 series 4K TVs will be available in the US in 2013 (and are already available in China.)

Panasonic 4K OLED TV - Expected 2014

Panasonic has demonstrated a 56 inch 4K Ultra HD OLED TV, it's just a prototype for now. A product based on the technology is expected in 2014.

What about 4K Content?

So what will you be able to watch if you get a 4K TV? Well not a lot yet! We expect more 4K content will start to appear soon.

Sony have announced that they will be releasing Mastered in 4K titles.

4K TVs deal with non-4K content by upscaling the picture - processing a lower resolution picture to get it up to the higher resolution.

There is also existing 4K content like major movies that will be made available as 4K becomes more popular at home.

4K streaming will require a lot of bandwidth but Netflix have already demonstrated streaming 4k content so we can expect things to head in this direction.
