Best Affordable Laptop For Photographers

Updated on September 14, 2014

HP Pavillion dv6 Series Laptop

I recently went shopping for a laptop computer. I am not going to focus on a number of choices here. I am focusing on the one that I believe you will love and want to get. I did a lot of research to decide this was one of the better laptops in an affordable price range for what I wanted. As a photographer I wanted a good amount of hard drive. This has plenty of space on it for me at 640 GB. I'll tell you more about this great computer on this lens and why I think you would love it too whether you are a photographer or not.

If you are buying your first laptop then I have put some helpful tips to know when buying one.

This will keep your lap cool. It also helps your laptop to not overheat. Not many laptops actually have this technology in them so you have to buy a cooling mat with fans. With this laptop you don't need a cooling mat.

  • Processor

2nd generation Intel® Core i5-2430M Processor 2.40GHz with Turbo Boost Technology up to 3.00GHz

If you have a faster processor it supports more efficient operations and applications performance.

  • Operating System

    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium (64-bit)

  • Display

    15.6-inch diagonal High-Definition BrightView LED Display (1366 x 768)

This is the perfect size for a laptop.

  • Memory (RAM)

    4GB DDR3

This helps you to use more programs at once and make them run faster with more memory

  • Hard Drive

640GB 5400RPM hard drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection

What is great about this hard drive protection is that if you drop your laptop this computer will lock up the hard drive to protect it. A great feature! This will help prevent data loss due to bumps or drops.

Hard drive space is where you store music, videos, pictures and documents.

  • Wireless

    802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth®

  • Optical Drive

    SuperMulti DVD burner

  • Video Graphics

Intel HD Graphics 3000 with up to 1696MB total graphics memory

  • Built-in Webcam

Video chat in low-light environments using your HP Pavilion dv6-6116nr Entertainment Notebook PC

  • Digital Media Reader

Transfer photos from a digital camera to your laptop PC without using cables

  • Fingerprint Reader

Manage passwords easily using your fingerprint

(this is certain models in the dv6 series)

I got the one that has this on it.

  • Beats Audio

Hear music in crisp, clear sound and deep bass

(This is on certain models of the dv6 series.) Mine has it. The sound is great! Loud and clear! You will love it!

I went to different online stores and stores around my town as well such as Costco, Office Depot and Walmart to do research on what laptop to buy. For the range of price this seems to be loved by many people. Many people talked about how fast the computer works. In some of the other lower priced laptops there were complaints about how slow they were, but not with this one. HP lists this series in their high performance category. It is a great laptop for gamers. I don't play games online so that was not a concern for me but it does indicate it will work great for my photography business.

When I went to the last store to look at these computers I finally found one in the exact price range and specifications I wanted. The salesman said this is the one he has also, so that tells you that it is one of the more popular laptops out there and for good reason, these are very good in an affordable range.

Cool Wireless Mouse

For me I wanted to get a wireless mouse and keyboard. I also got a laptop sleeve for my new laptop to protect it. This is the mouse I liked. They are cute if you like to have a cuter one instead of just a black one you might like these too. It works great! It comes with batteries. You can turn it off when you are not using to conserve the battery.

I don't like the pad on laptops so for me a mouse is the way to go. You can use a wired mouse or wireless one. The wireless one is just easier so that you don't have a bunch of wires to hassle with.

Wireless Keyboard

The reason I got a wireless keyboard is so that I don't have to lean forward to a table when using my laptop. I can just sit in a relaxed position with my keyboard on my lap and my laptop on a table.
