Best Alienware Laptop Deals & Reviews

Updated on April 16, 2013

Meet The Alien

Ever wondered about those geeky laptops with the alien heads on them that Sheldon and his buddies use in The Big Bang Theory? Those are Alienware laptops, and not only do they look awesome, they are also the best laptops you can get for gaming, work, and leisure (in that order).

I've been a proud owner of an Alienware M11XR2 for over 2 years now, and I never regretted buying this little beast. The day I first saw the M11X in a shop, I instantly fell in love with it. That's right, love at first sight :) Call me a geek (I won't be offended), but from the moment I first set my eyes on the Alienware I was sold.

Initially I had planned to go for a cheaper machine, suitable for web surfing and maybe an occasional game or two. While I did find a couple of computers for that price that seemed more or less okay, none of them really convinced me. And then by chance I stumbled across the elegantly futuristic AM11X.

First impressions

Are you ready to unbox your new Alien?

I had heard of Alienware before, but I wasn't aware of just how cool these computers look. They are designed to impress, and they do a good job at it. Not only is the workmanship excellent, they are also pure eye candy.

The first thing that sets Alienware apart from other laptop models is the wicked backlighting design. The keyboard glows from underneath, and there are knightriderish lights on the front. The alien logo on the cover also glows, as do the power button and the Alienware logo right beneath the screen.

All these lights are configurable, the color can be chosen and they can also be switched off. You can configure a different color for when the laptop is running on battery for example, and you can even set up effects like blinking in various colors when the battery is low, which is really quite useful when you are immersed in a game (or work!) and wouldn't otherwise have noticed.

Not quite as powerful as the larger models, but great for travelling and perfect if you, like me, use your laptop mainly for work and only play a casual game once in a while... in other words, less than 8 hours a day ;)

Windows 7 or Windows 8?

There's a hot debate which is the best operating system for gaming laptops.

WIndows 7 has been around for quite a while, and it's known to be good. It's reliable and will likely work with all of your games and devices.

Windows 8 is newer, more modern, and supports touch screens. It resembles the future of Windows operating systems. However, there are those who say "every other Windows OS is useless" and others may fear that not all their software and hardware will be supported by Windows 8.

If you were going to get an Alienware PC, which Windows version would you prefer?

      Alienware M14X 14" Laptop

      - Intel Core i7 2630QM Processor 2GHz

      - 8GB DDR3 RAM

      - 750GB Hard Drive

      - 14-Inch Screen, HD Graphics 3000

      - Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)

Fine gaming power for playing on the road. 14" is the minimum size you should get if you are going to game a lot without hooking up an external screen.

I was fortunate enough to be able to try out the laptop right in the shop. First thing I noted that compared to other laptops, the feel of the keyboard is just awesome. They keys feel soft to the touch, yet solid and are extremely responsive which is great for gaming. I do have an external keyboard which I use for my home setup, but for action packed games I prefer to use the laptops internal keyboards as it does not miss any keystrokes. This can be a matter of life and death in some games!

The icing on the cake, though, are the mysterious alienesque runes on the WASD keys, which are Alienware's trade mark. For any real gamer, these keys are just as important as the arrow keys, so the runes leave no doubt about your machine's raison d'être.

Note that the keyboard depicted above belongs to the M11X, which being the tiniest model, doesn't have room for a separate numeric keypad. Larger models have a more spacious layout and (from 17-inch upwards) they also have a numerical pad.

      Alienware M17x R4 AM17xR4-8424BK 17.3" Laptop

      - 3rd Generation Intel Core i7-3630QM (6MB Cache, up to 3.4GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0)

      - 8 GB DDR3 RAM

      - 750 GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive

      - 17.3-Inch Screen

      - Windows 8

      Which Size Shall It Be?

The M17X sitting next to its little brother, the M11X

The M11X is the smallest laptop of the series. I wanted a small, light laptop that would be light and easily manageable when travelling. Of course, for most games, an 11" screen is quite tiny. Therefore when using my Alienware at home, I connect a 23" external monitor, keyboard, and high quality gaming mouse, giving me perfect immersion and control

When travelling, I obviously use the laptop's built-in screen, keyboard and touch pad. This works great for web surfing, doing some work, or the occasional browser game. But then again, I don't tend to play much when I'm on the road anyways. If you do, then i would recommend you get a bigger model, at least 17".

If you are going to play 3D shooters or similar action oriented games, you will still want to connect an external gaming mouse as there is no way you are going to play an ego shooter using a touch pad. The Alienware's screen, graphics card, keyboard and sound leave nothing to be desired though.
