Best Big Tabletop Tablets 2013

Updated on May 15, 2013

18" 20" 22" Table Top Surface PCs / Desktop Hybrids

A guide to the best big tablets with 18" or bigger screens. Big tablets are coming! These tablets will be used in the home for gaming and entertainment and also in the office for collaborative work and design.

A big tablet clearly isn't as portable as the smaller versions, but provided it has a battery it can be moved around the house to show photos in the living room, watch a video in the kitchen and do some work in the study. Or maybe even watch the game in the yard!

These all in one PCs have lots of uses. They might be set on a table top to play board games as family or play two player sports games. They often have a vertical position so they can be used as a regular touch screen all in one PC.

A number of big tablets are already available or have been announced and we can expect to see more in future. These are typically full Windows 8 machines (rather than Windows RT.) or run Android for a regular tablet experience (but bigger!)

Personally I'm on the look out for the right gadget to use with my kids so they can read books - smaller tablets just aren't big enough for some of the gorgeous eBooks that are available. I also want to be able to play family board games and we often have more that one person using a tablet.

Sony VAIO Tap All-in-One Touch Screen SVJ20215CXB 20-Inch Desktop (Black)

@ Amazon

The Sony VAIO Tap 20" all in one touch screen computer is already on the market and meets the requirements of the big tablet category.

The VAIO Tap is a touch screen family computer which has a battery so it can be moved around the house without worrying about cables. It runs Windows 8.

This all in one computer can be used in vertical desktop mode (with a keyboard) or in horizontal table top position.

While other brands are still working on this format, Sony has produced a versatile family computer that can serve as a big tablet.

The Sony VAIO Tap is available in black or white with a choice of processors.

Android Smart Displays - Android Tablet / Monitor in One

Android Smart Displays are a new category of product. They are touch screens that can be used as a PC monitor, but also run Android so they can be used as big tablets.

We're expecting more products in this category to be released later in 2013.

ViewSonic VSD220 22-Inch (21.5-Inch Vis) Full HD 1080p LED Touchscreen Smart Display and Android 4.0 ICS All-in-One
ViewSonic VSD220 22-Inch (21.5-Inch Vis) Full HD 1080p LED Touchscreen Smart Display and Android 4.0 ICS All-in-One

The ViewSonic VSD220 is a 21.5 Inch smart display, it has a touch screen and runs Android so you can use apps, browse the web and all the other things you do on your Android tablet, but much much bigger!

A lot people will find that actually they can do everything they need on an Android tablet - play games, use social media, browse the web and shop, listen music and watch movies and videos.

You can also use the ViewSonic VSD220 as a display for another device such as a machine running Windows 8.

The lack of a battery rather lets this device down as you'll always need a power supply to plug it in.

Dell XPS 18 Tablet Desktop Hybrid

Dell has announced a new machine in the big tablet / all-in-one touchscreen desktop category. The Dell XPS 18 is an 18.4" touchscreen machine which can be used in upright desktop mode or at various angles including horizontal as a tablet.

The machine is due for release on 16th April 2013 in the US and Europe. src

The Dell XPS is intended to be used as a big tablet around the house and also a desktop. The screen is a little small to be most people's preference as a regular desktop (says she who regularly works on a laptop ...)

This machine has a good spec and a smart design (though a little too business-like for a home machine in my opinion.)

It's a direct competitor to the Sony Vaio Tap. The XPS 18 has a smaller screen than the Tap, but claims longer battery life and is lighter.

Panasonic 20-inch 4K Windows 8 Tablet

Panasonic have show their 20-inch 4K Windows 8 Tablet. Panasonic have graphic design in mind as one of the key tasks that an ultra HD big tablet would be good for. The tablet comes with a special pen for accurate work.

This 20" tablet can be used in various positions including a tilted angle like an architect's drawing board.

This tablet is still a concept and expected to be released in 2015.

ASUS Transformer AiO P1801-B037K 18.4-Inch Desktop

@ Amazon BUY NOW

ASUS have announced a desktop / big tablet hybrid machine. ASUS are well-known for the Transformer range of regular sized tablets and they've turned their engineering skill to a larger model.

The ASUS Transformer AiO is a multi-touch all-in-one desktop machine that runs Windows 8. But the display is detachable. In can act as a remote display for the Windows 8 desktop machine. Or it can be used as an 18.4" Android tablet.

The display has a battery so it can run for up to 5 hours, it recharges when it's put back on the base.

Things to do with a Big Tablet

  1. Share a picture book with your child or grandchild. Regular tablets are a bit small to get the most from picture books and it's hard to snuggle round a desktop.
  2. Play interactive board games or interactive games with the family. You won't have to worry about losing pieces.
  3. Show the photos from your latest vacation off on the coffee table when friends come round.
  4. Create some digital art with the touchscreen and a drawing package.
  5. Start watching a movie in the kitchen while you clean up after dinner and then take it upstairs to watch the last bit in bed.
