The Best iPhone 5 Keyboard Cases and Covers

Welcome to our round-up of the best keyboard cases for your iPhone 5! The smartphone era has brought us amazing new technologies that we all take for granted: GPS, HD video recording, skype, etc. One thing was unfortunately left behind: a physical keyboard. Touchscreen keyboards take some getting used say the least. I lack of tactile feedback, coupled with my large thumbs, means texting takes longer on my iPhone 5 than it did on my old 2006 LG phone with slide out keyboard.

Luckily there are a few keyboard cases designed specifically for the new iPhone 5 that enables you to use your old QWERTY keyboard skills to quickly fire off texts and emails. It will leave your fellow smartphone owners in the dust!

From notable phone-case makers like Boxwave, Minisuit and Chromo are some fantastic keyboard cases won't add much bulk to your slim iPhone 5 but will also give you a pleasant typing experience.

What to Look for in a Keyboard Case:

In figuring out what to consider the best keyboard cases for the iPhone, we took these 3 factors in to consideration:

  • Bulk - The iPhone 5 is thin and light (some say too much), which is a great achievement in design. There's no need to make your phone big and bulky. Your phone should still be able to comfortably fit in your front pocket.
  • Tactile Feedback - if you've used a lot of keyboards then you know that they are not created equal. How a keyboard responds to your presses can make all the difference.
  • Battery + Convenience - All of these keyboards have their own battery to power the keyboard. But does it last? And is it easy to turn on and start typing?

One More Note: All of these keyboards connect via bluetooth. So you'll need to turn on bluetooth functionality on your iPhone. While active bluetooth connection do drain the battery, after not using bluetooth for a few minutes your connection will idle and won't drain your battery.

1. Boxwave Keyboard Buddy iPhone 5 Case - Slim, Back-lit and Responsive

This case from Boxwave is the most complete and unintrusive keyboard case on this list. The material is made out of the same anodized aluminum that the iPhone 5's itself is made out of, which gives it a high quality look and feel that outshines the other plastic cases on this list.

The keyboard is slim and slides out easily when you need it. It is very slim (not the slimmest on this list, but close), and also has the luxury of being back-lit for those nighttime texting sessions. The case also has openings for all your ports and camera, so you can use everything on the iPhone without the case getting in the way.

It also has a long-lasting two week battery life, and charges via a USB cable (included).

2. MiniSuit iPhone 5 Keyboard Case - Budget-Friendly with Lots of Features

MiniSuit's case is very similar to Boxwave's keyboard case. It has a full QWERTY keyboard with lots of extra buttons like fast-forward, rewind, screen brightness up/down, and volume up/down. It also has a button where you can turn the back-light feature on and off. Which is nice because it conserves battery power. The plastic build of the case is no doubt the reason it's cheaper than Boxwave's case. It is however a comparable typing experience. It's about the same thickness as the Boxwave case (although a little heavier because of the material) and comes with a charging USB cable.

4. MegaGear Sliding Keyboard Case for iPhone 5

This is actually a great keyboard and was (in my opinion) the best keyboard for the iPhone. Why? It has two specialized iPhone keys: 'home' and 'search'. It means you can navigate your way from one app to another without even touching the screen. It's such a simple addition but it made a huge difference in how I used my iPhone.

But there's one big problem with this keyboard case: bulk. It easily doubles the size of your iPhone 5. When looking at it from the side, it looks like two conjoined iPhones. It's a little more difficult to fit in your front pocket. Which is a shame. Because adding those iPhone specific keys was a mark of genius. Now make it smaller!
