Best Over Ear Headphones under $50

Updated on November 9, 2013

Best Over Ear Headphones for under $50

Here are my suggestions on some really great sounding headphones for under $50. All of these headphones are over-the-ear or on-the-ear. A couple of them I personally own. Others are based on customer reviews.

Don't let someone discourage you that there aren't any good audiophile headphones under $50... If you are looking for an upgrade from a cheap headphone, or looking to buy someone a gift, you really can find a good deal. It just takes some research and persistence!

Don't Miss: Best Audiophile Headphones under $100

These are my current favorites

This page has gone through a lot of revisions because I keep comparing headphones and ones that I used to love I've fallen out of love with. I keep some of the other ones on this page because you might love them like I used to. But to stay honest and accurate, these Gemini HSR-1000 are the ones I listen to most often these days. They beat out more expensive pairs. Despite the low price point, I would not hesitate to call them audiophile. They are very accurate and uncolored. I use them with my Teac UD-H01 headphone amp.

Best Lightweight Portable On the Ear Headphones for Under $50 - I use these for exercise and travel.

Although many people like earbuds for exercise, I don't like how they feel. So I always wear over the ear headphones when I'm working out. Mostly I do low impact exercise like walking. These headphones are great. They have a lot of detail and clarity. I use them with my Sansa Fuze MP3 player.

They are ideal for travel or portable use because they fold-up pretty small, and the headband is made out of metal and guaranteed to last. They are also comfortable enough that I might be able to fall asleep wearing them, although I haven't tried. They go on the outside of the ear.

These are closed so they block out most outside noise. They don't actively cancel noise out, but they greatly reduce noise.

They advertise that they have strong base. Many of the reviewers are impressed with these headphones, and make comments that they are surprisingly great for the price.

DJ Style Over the Ear Headphones - Audiophile Quality for a Bargain Price

These are not lightweight, but if you're looking for a pair of cans for listening at home, perhaps even connected to a headphone amp, then this is a great pair to consider. One reviewer says that these are better than Beats, Bose, Dennon, Audio Technica, and Grado... Although that's a pretty blanket statement, I'm sure they do compete with some of those companies' models.

Audiophile Headphones for Around $50: Superlux HD668B - These are a real gem

Most people would say that there is no such thing as an under $50 audiophile headphone, and mostly they're right. However, these are amazing and they compete with my JVC HA-DX1 headphones and I think they are better than my Ultrasone HFI-550 headphones.

However, they are bright, so on some songs, this can be a problem. You can equalize them to reduce this problem.

Don't take my word for it: Read the reviews here and here.

Headphones that are on my Wish List - I do love headphones... But I need to save up my money for these.

Headphones are great because each pair of headphones sounds different, which makes listening to music on a new pair of headphones a whole new experience. Headphones are much cheaper than an audiophile speaker system. That is, you can spend $500 on headphones and a headphone amp and achieve a far better sound experience than you could from a $500 speaker system.

Other Places to Find Great Headphone Deals - Sometimes you can find headphones on sale!

I actually own other audiophile headphones that I paid less than $50 on, but I can't recommend them here because I can't find them for that low right now. Sometimes you can find a really good deal on headphones by watching for sales and discounts. Below are links to a few places where you can find high quality audiophile headphones marked down... sometimes. If these places ALWAYS had headphones for 1/2 off, then it wouldn't be such an amazing find!

Do you like listening to music with headphones?

I've used Koss Porta Pro folding headphones for many years and hope they never discontinue them! Great lens with excellent suggestions.

What a great selection of headphones! I am going to check some of them out as I need to invest in a pair of noise cancelling headphones for any tricky audio typing I get.
