Why You May Want a Rugged Phone Rather Than a Smart Phone

It seems today that you cannot go to a dinner or a movie, or any other public place, without being surrounded by people who are paying rapt attention to their smartphones. There is no question that the new phones provide a number of interesting functions. However, when you add together the cost of the cell phone purchase, the cell phone plan and the extra data charges, owning one of these phones can be quite expensive. In addition, not everyone wants a phone that talks to them or offers all these expensive extra services like apps and games.

It is possible to find phones that are practical, durable and can be used to place calls, text or take pictures. While they cannot do everything that a smartphone can do, they will meet your basic needs and hand up to rough treatment.

What Type of Activities Require a Tough Phone?

If you enjoy spending time boating, fishing, skiing, hiking, hunting or working outdoors, you may decide that a rugged, waterproof style phone is more practical than a more fragile smartphone. You want something that you can use to place a phone call, even if you have dropped it in a stream or it falls out of your pocket while you are hiking. You do not want to have to worry about a broken screen or similar problem, especially if there is an emergency and you need to place a call from the wilderness.

Several manufacturers produce them. In general, these phones are simpler and less expensive than some of the new smartphones and they are also more durable. The service plans for these phones are typically less expensive, as well.

The tough lines of phones are designed to be rugged and handle rougher treatment than their smartphone competitors. The men in our family who work as contractors or firemen, and who like to ride motorcycles and engage in other rough activities enjoy having a phone that doesn't have to be babied. They can be dropped, kicked, banged or fall into water and will still keep working.

There are other advantages to these phones, too. Frequently they can be purchased at substantial savings compared to smartphones.

The next time you are in the market for a phone, you may want to look beyond the smartphone market and see if there is a rugged line of phones that would actually meet your needs better and save you money.

This is One of the Most Practical Cell Phones You Can Get

Verizon Casio GzOne Boulder No Contract Rugged Phone Orange

This bright orange phone is easy to spot. I especially like the fact that this is one of the Casio rugged phones that are great for people who are hard on their phones. Again, no contract is required!

Comparison Shop Before Deciding on a Carrier

Before you choose any phone, whether it is a smartphone or a more rugged phone, you should start with your current carrier and see what they have to offer. You may want to check with the competitors, too. Make sure you let them know about your specific needs ... whether the phone just needs to be tough or it should also be waterproof. You may also be able to purchase one that is pre-paid, so you don't need to have a traditional carrier.

You want to be certain that you know exactly what you are purchasing before you commit yourself.

Other Features You May Want on Your Rugged Phone

When you choose one of these tough new cell phones, there is no need to give up all the enhanced features of other cell phones. For example, you can find phones that have cameras, texting and similar capabilities.

Basically, you can find the features that you want, without the need to pay for features that you do not need ... like games and similar apps.
