Updated on August 4, 2014

Choosing The Best RAM for Your Gaming Laptop

Random Access Memory (RAM) is a form of computer data storage and it stands as somewhat buffer between your CPU and Hard Drive. When CPU is processing data, it's picking small bits in your system memory, jumping from place to place reading, writing and rewriting information. Hard drive works very good when it dealing with large block of data, but show extremely poor performance when jumping from sector to sector or switching from write to read. That explains why we need RAM to overcome this problem. If you have more RAM, CPU read from the slow hard drive less often, and faster speed of RAM means your CPU can grab it's bit faster.

There are several manufacturers well known for their ability to make the best RAM memory in the world including Corsair, Kingston, Patriot Memory, Crucial, Samsung and G. Skill. Corsair and Kingston lead by producing RAM Memory exclusively for gaming purpose to deliver highest performance which is Corsair Vengeance and Kingston HyperX. Before you make any decision to buy RAM for your gaming laptop, I'm totally recommend you to read the important information I provided below.

Now let see the rundown of best RAM Memory available in the market now and pick the one that suit your budget and needs for gaming!

Important information you need to know before buying RAM Memory for your laptop

How Much Memory Do You Need?

I would say 4GB memory is balance in term of cost and performance. Even the latest and high end game doing well with just 4GB of memory. However, I do suggest you to equip your gaming laptop with at least 8GB of memory since most of the latest game like Crysis 3 and Dead Space 3 require 8GB of memory for optimal performance. Purchasing more than 8GB RAM can give slight performance boost, improve system security and put less strain on your hard disk. Besides, you can disable pagefile entirely since 12GB & 16GB RAM is more than enough for your gaming laptop needs.

What About Speed of RAM?

It's important for you to know your RAM speed so you don't waste money buying RAM of higher speed because eventually the system will determine your RAM speed according to the lowest speed of RAM you have in the slots. Let's say currently you have RAM with speed of 1333 MHz and plan to buy another RAM with 1600 MHz speed, the system will take 1333 MHz as your speed. So, you can either purchase RAM of same speed or upgrade both to same higher speed.

Can I install DDR3 RAM into DDR2 slot?

Most of old laptops has DDR2 slot for RAM instead of DDR3 RAM for newer laptop. If you have DDR2 RAM, you just can upgrade your laptop by purchasing another RAM of DDR2 type. DDR3 RAM is not compatible with DDR2 RAM slots and vice versa.

How to install RAM in your laptop?

You can either follow easy guide on how to do it Here or if you prefer to watch it in video, click Here.

Which brand to choose?

I'm totally recommend you to either buy Corsair Vengeance, Kingston HyperX Genesis or Kingston HyperX. Kingston HyperX Genesis is better for hardcore gaming and have slightly better performance compare to Kingston HyperX. Some review said that Kingston HyperX Plug and Play doesn't give a massive performance boost and more expensive than slower RAM. As for me, I'm using Corsair Vengeance for my laptop and it works well so far!

How to differentiate between memory for laptop and desktop?

The memory modules for laptop is known as SODIMM and it has 204 pins while the memory modules for desktop is called DIMM and it has 240 pins. DIMM is about twice as long as SODIMM. DIMM Memory looks like This while SODIMM Memory exactly like This.

Wasn't sure what type and of RAM you should buy?

You can find the right memory to be used by your laptop by simply downloading the Crucial system scanner tool Here.
