Cheapest Memory Card Reader Best Buy At Amazon

Finding The Cheapest Memory Card Readers

Recently we decided to buy a memory card reader and after a little research we were more confused than when we started. So I decided this would be a good opportunity to share our experience in hopes that it might help someone else in their decision making when looking for the best buy on the cheapest memory card reader.

Of course we would all like to buy the best memory card reader but sometimes our budget has us looking at the cheapest prices. After a little research we found you can still get one of the best and cheapest memory card readers if you know where to look and what to look for.

Okay, I guess I should backtrack a little and explain what a memory card reader is and why you might want or need one. Basically it is a device that will read flash memory cards and transfer this information to your computer. I am sure most of you have seen or used flash memory cards as most new electronic products have them available to provide removable storage.

These flash memory cards are available in several types and formats. For example, if you have a digital camera, chances are you have a memory card that slides into a slot for extra storage of pictures. If you want to transfer those pictures to your computer, you will need something to fit that flash memory card into to be able to transfer your pictures, hence a memory card reader.

Most people used to use a universal or firewall cable but that required physically connecting the device to your computer. With a memory card reader, you simply insert the flash memory card into the slot and plug the memory card reader into your computer via a USB port. This is one of the reasons it is a good idea to check what types of memory cards a memory card reader supports before you buy.

If you have multiple devices like a digital camera, camcorder, MP3 player or even your cell phone, it would be nice if you could use one memory card reader for all of those flash memory cards.

Now that being said, depending on what your needs are, you can buy a single memory card reader or a multiple memory card reader. The difference is the single reads only one format and the multiple will read a variety of memory card formats. So if you have several different devices, you may find the multiple memory card reader to be the best value.

I have included a brief review of three of the best buys on memory card readers we considered when shopping for the least inexpensive. Again just depending on your individual needs, I am sure one of these will satisfy both your need to have the best as well as one that fits your budget.

Best Buy Targus Memory Card Reader

One of the first memory card readers I researched was made by Targus. This one I think could be considered at the low end on price point but still at the top when it comes to versatility and features. I went through many customer reviews as I was researching and found that most were satisfied with the product. There were a few who felt it did not hold up to its claim of being a Universal 25-in-1 Digital Memory card reader/writer, but most found it did work with a multitude of different media products. Here are some of the features of the TGR-CRD25 memory card reader:

  • Features high-speed USB2.0 connectivity for superior data transfer speeds
  • It is backward compatible with all USB 1.1 ports( meaning it will work with older systems)
  • Easy to install
  • Plug-and-play technology
  • Compatible with both Windows XP and Mac OS X operating systems

As with any new device you always want to make sure it is compatible with any other device you might be using it with prior to purchasing. If you are unsure, you can always call the company before making the purchase. Although this memory card reader is very budget friendly there is nothing more frustrating than trying to install something that should be plug and play or trying to get it to work with another device and running into compatibility issues.

This memory card reader does require a Pentium class windows machine with USB support, and the operating system should be Windows 98SE or higher. If you have a Mac, it also requires USB support and Mac OS 9.2x or higher operating system. Some of the memory cards that are compatible with the Targus TGR-CRD25 are:

  • BenQ cards
  • I-mate
  • LG
  • Motorola
  • Nokia
  • PalmOne
  • Samsung
  • Sony Ericsson

This memory card reader is lightweight and compact which makes it great for a laptop or for traveling. It is really a great buy for a casual user who needs to watch their budget, but if you are looking for semi or more professional use, then you may want to keep looking and plan on spending a little more. Again it really depends on your individual needs as to which memory card reader is the best buy for you and I hope these reviews offer some helpful information.

Ativa Memory Card Reader-Cheapest Best Buy

The Ativa SmartMate 10-in-1 USB 2.0 Memory Card Reader rounds out our list as the budget option offering the cheapest best buy on a memory card reader.

The price point is attractive though it does lack some features, not supporting SDHC being the main one. If you are only planning on using the device for one particular card format then this is a good buy, especially if you find it on sale. But if you think you might need a high speed device to support multiple card types on a regular basis then I suggest spending just a few more dollars and going with SanDisk Card Reader for the best buy.

Compatible with: CompactFlash Type I & II, Microdrive, SmartMedia, Secure Digital (SD), MultiMediaCard (MMC), Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Magic Gate Memory Stick and xD-Picture Card.

  • Memory card reader/writer reads from and writes to 10 different flash memory cards.
  • Hi-Speed USB 2.0 connectivity provides easy Plug and Play operation no power supply required
  • Preserves the batteries of your digital camera, MP3 player or other portable device.
  • Compatible with Windows 2000/XP/VISTA

Thanks for stopping in! It really depends on what brand and model of phone you have. Most of the memory card readers will work on more than one device or more than one brand. If you look around on Amazon or Ebay they usually have it listed in their descriptions. Good Luck!
