Computer Running Really Slow ?

Updated on March 9, 2011

Don't Call in the Experts just yet....

About 3 weeks ago my computer started to lock up,freeze, take forever to load a page and generally mis-behave.  After, I tried shouting at it and bashing it against the wall, I started to look at other ways to stop my computer running really slow.

A few people reccommended getting a computer guy out to take a look which would cost between $50 and $100.  I decided to do this as a last resort, but first I wanted to try tackling the problem myself.  So I started googling and craftily asking our IT guy at work a few questions.  Guess what, no longer is my computer running really slow.  I solved it myself for which I am quite proud of myself and I used the $50 to $100 to go and buy myself a new pair of jeans and shoes.  Just don't tell my husband that the total of these purchases were $120! Sssshhhh!

I thought I would create a lens on what I did incase anyone else has the extremely annoying problem of their computer running really slow......................

Spring Clean

Go through your photos, videos and any files that you have on your PC and clear out as much as you can. You will be surprised how much space this will create - mine created 7GB!

I know that you will have photos on there that you don't want to get rid of and you don't want to have to pay for them to be processed. I downloaded all my photos onto disks which I labelled and filed so that I can keep adding to them.

Verbatim discs -120 minute discs

Record your home movies onto Verbatim discs. These will record up to 2 hours of quality home movies.

Sony Rewriteable Discs

Create, edit and record your home movies with these rewriteable discs. The fact that they are Sony discs is enough to tell you that the discs are excellent quality.

Burn all Your Movies onto Disc

Create Movies with Sony

Sony will give you an excellent finished dvd. It will give you transitions, titles, special effects and add music to your dvds. You can rotate, zoom to create amazing slideshows. Create multiple buttons, links and menus. Great for weddings and anniversaries. Also great for business presentations with a professional finish.

Cyberlink Movie Maker - Make it Easy on Yourself - Ultra 8

This will be great for users on all levels. Easy-to-use but will create pro results. It will upgrade SD videos to quality like HD. Fix video problems. Share your videos on facebook and YouTube, burn to discs and put to mobile devices.

Read Up on Creating Your Own Dvds

This helps with every aspect of creating your own Dvds right from choosing your camera. It teaches you everything you need to know plus lots of other tricks, tips and information.

The D, D's

Next you will need to defragment your hard drive. This is a key factor to stopping your computer running really slow. Defragmenting tidies up all the little pieces that are left behind every time you, modify or move files around your PC. It makes them all compact and moves them all to exactly where they should be. To defragment my PC I went into the start up menu, accessories, system tools and defragment was in there. Mine had to run overnight, so don't be alarmed by this. I would advise that you set it going at a time when you don't need to get onto the computer.

The other D is for Disk Clean Up. You will find this in the same place as your deframenting option. If you select it then it will go on to show you how much free space you can create by doing a disk clean up. This will delete things like temporary files etc. Be sure to uncheck anything that you do not want to delete.

Defragment Your Computer

Store Your Photos and Movie Clips......

Get rid of all your old internet history. When you visit a website your PC stores the address for you so that when you start to type it in your PC will find the address for you. This goes for forms and passwords etc. These hold up space on your hard drive so it is good practice to get into the habit of deleting them. This is done easily in Internet Options.

This is found by clicking on your start menu and then control panel. In here you will see the Internet Options icon, double click. In here you can clear you previous browser history and free up even more space.

Norton Internet Security

Protects your PC without slowing it down. Stops viruses, bots, spyware and identity theft. Norton will let you know if any of the web sites that you want to visit are harmful to your PC or dodgy sellers.

After deleting files dont forget to empty the Recycle Bin to totally free up the space

Registry Cleaner Programs

Register Cleaner Programs was something that I had never even heard of before, but it was another thing that added to solving the problem of my computer running very slow. The registry size keeps growing when you use Windows. When the registry becomes very large, your computer's performance will be decayed and unstable.

It is vital to choose one of the Registry Cleaner Programs wisely as some of the programs can actually delete files needed to run your PC, which in turn creates other problems. I have included details of the one I used here. You can do a free scan to see how many files that you have that can be deleted. Mine came back with over 600! No wonder I had the problem of my computer running very slow.

Check It Registry Cleaner

Any hidden problems will be found and fixed. Boosts PC performance and speed. If you accidentally get rid of something that you need you can undo the changes.

There are so many things that you can do prior to giving up, I'm happy you took the time to find a solution to a problem that many people are faced with, excellent lens.

I actually came across this page looking for a solution to my computer's issue - I have done everything on your list besides the registry thing and delete history - which I did after I read this. I had first bought an external hard drive because I take a lot of photos, so I ended up moving just about everything I have except programs, onto the hard drive. Then I defragmented, disc cleanup, virus scan (clean), deleted history. It seems like it's even slower now that I've done all that, so I'm just stumped.

Try the fre program CCLEANER - run it every few days and it will remove tons of files that you don't need. Very safe and easy to use. Anothre good tip is to completley reinstall everything every few years. Back up your files and reinstall windows to start fresh.

Your lens is really complete, but maybe you've forgotten just one little thing: when my pc doesn't seem to work, I usually tell him (I'm sure it's a male, it's as slow as only men can be): "if you don't work the way I wish, I'm going to put you away and to buy a younger one with a looooonger memory". Usually it works.... ;-)

My laptop and I have a love - hate relationship. It loves to run as slowly as it possibly can, I hate to change any of the settings in case it case worse. Guess what... I'm opening Windows and letting the fresh breeze of a clean registry blow through. Thanks

Very cool info. I have been thinking about adding an outboard hard drive to clear up some space. Using FireFox rather than Internet Explorer has helped tremendously. I have a fairly affordable laptop (under 300) that I have had for three years. It still runs like the day I got it and it even has Vista. I know. That's amazing in and of itself.

I agree with micmun. WOT is great and Malwarebytes is highly recommended by my computer 'guru'. Good advice you have given here that everyone using a computer can use. ~`Blessed by a SquidAngel~~

There are a few apps that I use ( all from cnet.com ) to keep my computer tip top. They do not conflict with each other, and have served me well since I've been online. They are :

      Advanced System care.

Iobit Security 360 ( from utilities button on advanced system care, or cnet )

      CCleaner

      Malwarebytes

      WiseDisk cleaner

      AVG anti virus

Best of all there all free. Hope this helped. P.S. If you use firefox browser , be sure to download WOT from the firefox add-ons

I found I was keeping 1,000 of old emails - message sent, messages stored. All that text was taking quite a bit of space when I deleted it. "Empty the recycle bin" is a great reminder!

You might want to add adware and spyware. These are programs that run behind the scenes to get info of sites that you visit. There are good programs to get rid of these.

This is a very helpful lens and could save viewers a bit of cash.

Nice lens, lot of good information, my computer usually goes well, but today, I have done a disk clean up, still slow and not loading right, maybe it's Squidoo, as there is not much going on, probably because of the Christmas holiday.

        Thanks for sharing. Blessed

Excellent advice! My computer was unbelieveably slow - and, like you, I'm addicted to Squidoo, so was not happy about the "wading through treacle" issue while trying to create lenses. A couple of weeks ago, I did most of the steps you've recommended here, and it's like a spring chicken again! Great lens! Blessed. :)

Great tips for keeping an aging pc fast, clean, and optimally performing. Most newer operating systems self defrag (no need), but xp and older require this to optimize disk space allocation.

I'd like to add, getting a little RAM (very cheap) can speed up a pc. If you're running a 32bit operating system stick with 3Gbytes (any more and your OS can't handle it).

64bit operating systems allow addressing for a HUGE amount of memory, 2^64 to be precise.
