Here is how you can configure your Digicel smartphone running the Android Operating System to connect to the internet. Digicel Papua New Guinea is very reluctant to release this settings to its much larger customer base in Papua New Guinea.

The Digicel PNG network automatically sends configuration if a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) is inserted in the phone for the first time. You have to reply to the automatically generated SMS (Short Messaging Service) messages to hook up you smartphone to the internet.

However, many people are not really sure on how to go about with the settings and hence, this article is written to guide everyone to manually configure their smartphones on Digicel network in Papua New Guinea so that the smartphone connects to the internet.

How to set up your Digicel smartphone

Below is a step by step guide on how to setup your smartphone so that it connects to the internet.

  1. On the ideal screen press the Menu button or select Menu to display a list of menus
  2. Scroll to and locate the Settings menu
  3. Select the Settings menu
  4. In the Settings menu select Wireless & Networks menu
  5. In the Wireless & Networks menu select Mobile Networks
  6. In the Mobile Networks menu select the Network Settings menu
  7. From the Network Settings menu choose the Access Point Names (APN) menu

Configuring you APN

Now you are in the Access Point Names (APN) menu. Check to see if there is an existing Access Point Name or if there is an option to create a new Access Point Name.

  1. Select Create New APN to create a new Access Point Name
  2. Enter the details as shown in Access Point Names Settings section
  3. Where there is no option to Create New APN, you may edit an existing APN by changing its default values with the corresponding ones as shown in Access Point Names Settings section

APN Settings

You are now in the APN Settings page. You enter the following details into their corresponding fields.

Enter the following:

Name: Digicel PNG Internet

APN: internet.digicelpng.com

MCC: 537

MNC: 03

IP Version: IPv4

Authentication Type: CHAP

APN Type: Defualt,Supl

Do not change anything else. If there are other or default values in other fields, you must delete these values. The only fields that should have values inserted in them are the ones above.

Select your APN

You will be able to access the internet only if you choose to use the Digicel APN which you have just configured.

Now after you configure your Digicel APN you must select it as you APN to access the internet. Do the following:

  1. From the Edit Access Point menu, press the back button to go back to the APN’s menu
  2. Select Digicel PNG Internet as your APN
  3. Press the Back button two times to go back to the Mobile Network Settings menu

Enable Data Connection

To allow your smartphone to transmit and/or receive data you have to enable its data connection. Do so by following the instructions below:

  1. When in Mobile Network Settings menu, under the Data Settings menu, check or tick the Data Enabled box to allow your phone to transmit and/or receive data
  2. Press back all the way to your Ideal screen

Conclusion

When you successfully configure your phone you can be able to access the internet from it by launching the mobile internet browser, whatever it is. These settings are used by the Digicel carrier in Papua New Guinea to allow its mobile subscribers to connect to the internet. Make sure you have enough credits in your phone before your start configuring because nil credits may result in confusion.
