      In there?

He's been on medical leave since January 2011.  If these events seem sudden to you or without reason, it's only because you don't follow anything that goes on with the company.  Jobs was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in October 2003, and it was first disclosed in August 2004.  He also had a liver transplant in 2009.

Tim Cook, the new CEO, has been running the show this year and filled in during the last two medical leaves that Steve Jobs took, and I think he's going to do just fine heading up the company.

I'd guess medical and the chairman thing is a red herring.

Steve Jobs was treated some years ago for a Cancerous tumor in his pancreas. He resigned effective immediate, and he's now the Director. He will be hailed as a genius of the computer era, having got a lot of things right about the direction computers and communications are moving. And he is 55 years old. He has lost a fair bit of weight recently. He also founded Pixar Studios! What a great guy! I wish him luck, he deserves it.

True Steve Jobs' replacement has been long expected/over-due. I am curious to see if there would be any change in the style of apple campaign than that of Jobs'

The chances are that the style could all change, but we can't say until we actually see Tim Cook out there, according to the posts above, he has been taking over while Jobs have been on medical leave.

It's sad, but he might have resigned due to his health problem only......

It will be interesting to see what effect it has with him leaving. the company will still be as differential and creative as ever. But he was a corporate face that people know. He also did some fantastic work with the product launches of new tech like the Ipad. I'd be curious to see how a new piece of tech would get launched with out his input.

I wish him well and am thankful for all he's given to the industry. I'm sitting in front of my Mac OS X and can't imagine going back to a PC. It is by far the best computer I've ever used and makes working online a pleasure.

I'm sure Apple will continue to grow on the successful foundation and corporate culture he has built.

I saw this article yesterday on NPR.  Does Jobs Have Place in History Beside Edison, Ford?  He is gifted as one of the great innovators.
