Free Cell Phones for Disabled People

Updated on September 13, 2012

These free phones for the disabled have limited usage too. You are only allowed a certain amount of minutes each month. The usually do not go over one hour depending on the state that you live in. Also, each household is only allowed one phone. As you can see, these phones are really meant to be used for emergency purposes. You won’t have many minutes for chatting with friends. The good thing is that unused minutes rollover to the next month.

Go to Safelink Wireless and sign up for the program. Since this program is not running in all states, you have to check from their list of states that are offering this. You can input your zip code and the website will tell you whether or not it’s available where you live. One you get that information, you can fill out the application and submit documents proving your income or papers showing that you are getting other government social benefits.

Every year you have to submit your income documents again to Safelink Wireless to prove that you are eligible for free cell phones for disabled people. If you become ineligible then you won’t be able to get free minutes anymore, but you can still keep the phone.

Many people who are disabled tend to live on limited income. This may be due to the fact that they are unable to work and thus receive only disability payments. Since disabled people live in meager income, they are not able to afford a lot of necessary basic things in life, let alone get a cell phone.

Many years ago, having a cell phone was considered a luxury. Nowadays, having a cell phone is a must. Cell phones are used to save lives. Say for example, you got in a car wreck out in the middle of nowhere. If you have a cell phone on hand, you can easily dial for help. If you didn’t have a cell phone, you would have to wait until a car comes along or try to go to the nearest town to get help. And if you were involved in a really bad car accident, neither of the previous options may be available to you.

Luckily though, these days the government is helping the disabled people get free cell phones for disabled people. These free phones are operated through SafeLink Wireless. Your income is used to determine whether or not you get a free phone. You will need to show Safelink Wireless your pay stubs. But you can tell if you will probably get free cell phones for disabled people if you are already participating in other government sponsored social programs like food stamps.

Is Safelink legit? What kind of info do they ask for. Any chance of losing personal identity through this program? Anyone know? I would like to know more before I give out any personal info.

I got one of these phones for my disabled son. It worked out great. Similar to "tracphone" that you see at Walmart. They give 68 minutes a month and it goes in automatically. You can buy extra minutes with no problem.
