Free Government Cell Phones

Updated on September 13, 2012

Free government cell phones are free phones mainly to be used for households in times of emergencies. These cell phones are very limited in usage. You can only get about an hour of talk time on these phones each month. If you want to go over that amount then you’d have to buy some prepaid minutes. As you can see with the amount of minutes you have to work with, the phones should only be used for emergencies.

In order to apply for free government cell phones, you have to go through Safelink Wireless. They are the provider. They don’t currently operate their services in every state yet, so you’ll have to check on their website. If your does have this service, then fill out the application for a free phone. You will need to send your W2 or some information which shows your income eligibility. Safelink needs to check your income every year if you plan on staying on their program. Each household is only allowed one free phone. However, you are allowed to keep the phone for free if you decide to cancel the program later on. After you submit your application and they check your income, you’ll get your free phone soon after.

Make sure you are saving your minutes each month. If you save your minutes, they will rollover to the next month so you’ll accumulate them overtime.

A lot of people can’t afford to pay for exorbitant cell phone fees. Although the cost of cell phones has gone down a lot over the past decade, it is still considerably expensive. At least it is more expensive than a landline. A single line with only the basic services could cost at least 30 dollars per month. If you plan on adding on family members then the cost would go up by 10 dollars per person added.

Although cell phones are expensive, many people now have cell phones because it is convenient. It is also very useful in times of emergency. Any time you need help anywhere, just pick up your cell phone and make a call and help will be on its way. But the cost of cell phones can be prohibitive to people that don’t make much money. In order to help these people, the government offers free government cell phones.

The idea of free phones for those who actually need them is a good idea. But when this country is 14 trillion in debt I don't think giving away free phones and airtime is a good idea.... How are we going to turn this around, spend our way out of debt?
