Heavy Duty Electric Pencil Sharpener

Updated on February 5, 2013

Not All Pencil Sharpeners are the Same

You have your pencil sharpeners and then you have your heavy duty pencil sharpeners! If you have high volume use, a variety of pencil sizes, or you simply want something a bit more sturdy and powerful, then a high volume model might be the way to go.

We'll discuss the advantages of a heavy duty electric pencil sharpener briefly and show you a few popular models from which to choose.

About Heavy Duty Electric Pencil Sharpeners

Whether you have a class room full of kids, an office full of employees, or you're a work-at-home writer, you may have a lot of pencils to sharpen each day. The average electric pencil sharpener isn't really built for high volume. Their motors give out, often because of over heating.

It may be time to explore the possibility of a heavy duty electric pencil sharpener if you really want the job done. A good one will offer a sturdy construction, with rubber feet for stability, dual steel construction cutters for the best sharpening, as well as a more powerful and fan cooled motor. These sharpeners are built to handle the volume necessary in a commercial or educational setting. Many also offer safety features to shut down if they overheat. They'll store more shavings so that you don't have to empty them out every few hours and they often accommodate several different sizes of pencils.

Below are some of the better known brands of heavy duty electric pencil sharpeners.

Oftentimes a pencil is the only writing tool still functioning. I know, having been an adjunct professor for 38 years or so. Thanks for detailing the commercial unit-now I know what to buy!

HELP!!!!!!!!! I am looking for an electric pencil sharener that works on Colored Pencils. I teach 5th grade science and social studies in a VERY hands on way so I need one. Time is so valuable in a classroom and the time the students have to spend sharpening their own colored pencils with the hand held type sharpeners eats up time. The regular electric pencils sharpeners wear out fast if colored pencils are placed in them. I really at this point am not worried about price - I just want one that WORKS and will WORK for a LONG time. ANYONE have any suggestions, please?

You are so right about standard electric pencil sharpeners not holding up to volume. My sister volunteered at a school a couple years ago and one of her tasks at the end of the day was to sharpen all the pencils for the classroom. The pencil sharpeners would overhead and stop until they cooled down and after a while they didn't sharpen as well and would quit working completely.

I'm not sure what brand I have, but a good electric pencil sharpener is a must for artists. I still have the same one and it's served me well.

What I hate about pencil sharpeners is; they always break my pencil. Just when it gets sharp it breaks it off.
