7 Ways to Quickly Get More Followers on Instagram

Updated on May 16, 2018

Instagram is one of the hottest social networks now, all based on the idea of sharing photos taken on your smartphones, tablets or other handheld devices. It’s a great way to share your special moments and to connect with others around the world.

Here are some ways you can get more followers and likes on your Instagram photos and account.

1. Follow your friends

This one is pretty obvious, but still often overlooked – follow your friends’ account on Instagram, and they’ll be sure to follow you back. If you connect your Facebook or email accounts, you’ll also be able to see which of your real-life contacts are also on Instagram.

2. Share to other social networks

When you’re posting a picture to Instagram, there is a section asking you if you also want to share this photo to other social networks, like your Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr and Foursquare. Go ahead and connect your Instagram to all of your other networks! Photos that you post on Instagram will then be automatically shared to these other social sites – and to possible new followers.

Have an account on Vimeo or YouTube? Tell your subscribers to follow you! Put your Instagram name in the description box, as well as on your homepage. On your other social networks (such as Tumblr, Twitter, deviantART, just to name a few) list your Instagram account name in your contact info.

3. Like and comment on other photos

Have you ever heard of ‘doing the double tap’? This is Instagram slang for liking a photo (when you hit the photo on the screen twice in quick succession, it automatically counts as a like). Feel free to ‘double tap’ other users’ photos!

Also, it’s fun when you get comments on your photos, isn’t it? Leave some of your fave Instagrammers comments on their photos. Give compliments, ask questions… who knows – you might even get a reply or shoutout! Also, leaving a comment on others’ photos will guarantee that user at least checking out your profile, which could possibly result in a new follower.

4. Hashtags and Geotagging

Hashtags are an integral part of Instagram. People use these to discover other photographs, current events and users, as well as to put themselves out there.

Every time you post a picture, be sure to add in hashtags. Yes, while some do go overboard when using these, it’s still always a good idea to include at least a few when posting so that others can see your photos.

Using some of the most popular Instagram hashtags is a surefire way to attract more people (and followers) to your profile. Some popular hashtags include:

  • #love
  • #cute
  • #inspirational
  • #fashion (or #style)
  • #beach
  • #beautiful
  • #food

Also, use hashtags that include city names (for example: #NewYorkCity or #Recife), and popular event names (for example: #Coachella, #NewYearsEve and #WarpedTour)

Using the Photo Map option can also help gain you some views. This is basically a form of geotagging - giving a photo a geographical location by tagging it there. People always like to see what’s currently going on in their city, or what another town looks like. Regularly taking photos at local hotspots, restaurants or historic landmarks, then tagging them on the Photo Map will be sure to attract some new followers, especially those that live in the same area.

5. Take interesting photos

Created an awesome graphic drawing or took a picture of something crazy that just happened? Share it on Instagram! Interesting photos (tagged with hashtags of course) can result in new followers. When taking photos, try interesting angles or using some of the built-in Instagram Filters. Plus, there are dozens of other complimentary apps available that can help you make your photo look fantastic. Here's a list of the top seven photo editing apps that are popular among Instagram users.

Also, sometimes it’s better to post just a few amazing photos in one day than a couple dozen basic ones.

6. Use the ol' 'Follow Back' method

The rule of the ‘Follow Back’ tactic is this – everyone that follows you, you have to follow them back. Simple, huh?

Remember, there are many users out there just like you who want to get more followers. Using the Follow Back method, you’ll be sure to gain some followers soon, just as long as you keep your promise to follow them back. You can even write something on your profile to the effect of “I follow back!”, and even use similar hashtags when posting photos.

7. Look at what’s popular

Do you have some photos that gained dozens of likes and followers after you posted them? What were those photos of, and what hashtags did you use? Try taking similar photos to these, and using the same tags. You’ll continue to gain followers for sure.

Also, see what some of the current top photos are by following the official Instagram Team account – these featured photos often have thousands if not hundreds of likes, and the users quickly gain popularity.

I like to "like" and comment on photos of one particular user because I'm genuinely like his or her photos, so I follow that person and it's most likely that he/she follows me too. That's one method I've tried and it's really effective. I haven't used the "follow" hashtags yet but I would attempt to do that someday. Thanks for posting. :)
