Huawei Honor Bee Review : Value for Money

Updated on November 30, 2015

A Budget Android Phone

Huawei Honor Bee is a low budget android smartphone. One can get it under Rs..5000. The company has announced this India exclusive phone on May this year. It became available since then.

Like the Mi brand of Xiaomi, Huawei is also trying to create a popular brand named “honor”. There are other phones of the series too, like Honor 6, Honor 3X Pro etc.

I am going to give you an unbiased review of that phone. It will help you to decide whether to buy this phone or not. Let us know more about this phone.

The phone has a 4.5 inch display. The screen resolution is 480 x 854 pixels. The OS of the phone is Android 4.4 (KitKat). The CPU of "Honor Bee" is a 1.2 GHz Quadcore. The phone has 1 GB RAM to run smoothly. The internal memory of this device is 8 GB which is not 100% available to the user. There are two cameras in the phone. The primary camera is about 8 Mega Pixels and the secondary camera is 2 MP. It supports 2 SIMS and 3G connectivity. In the next sections of this hub we will know more about these features.

Rating of Huawei Honor Bee

4 stars for Huawei Honor Bee

Design, Look and Feel

The length of the phone is 5.29 inches and the width is 2.63 inches (134.3 mm and 66.7 mm in SI units). It makes the phone perfectly easy o hold. It is thin; the thickness is just 10 mm. The edges of the phone are curved. Honor Bee looks like a well built handset. This phone does not look like a cheap device. It never feels heavy or awkward in the hand.

The capacitive buttons below the screen are responsive, but not back-lit. The power button and the volume button are chrome coated. The micro USB port is on the top as well as the 3.5 mm jack.

Huawei Honor Bee sports a 4.5 inch display. With a screen resolution of 480 x 854, it has an average pixel density of 217. The display supports multi touch with two fingers only.

It offers decent viewing angles. The colour reproduction is good. It has also sharp contrast ratio and so images look crisp on it. But the problem with it is that it is very glossy. So, it reflects sunlight too much. That makes it too difficult to read in direct sunlight. The screen is also a fingerprint magnet.

As we already know, Huawei Honor Bee possessed an 8 MP rear camera. We must admit that the quality of this camera is far better than expected from a sub 5000 phone. The auto focus camera snaps nice looking photos in daylight.

But, of course, the low light photography is not that good. It cannot focus well when the light is not sufficient. Low light photos come with a lot of noise. There is a dual LED flash to help you during the night photography. This phone offers full HD videography options. But this 1080P videos are not very detailed. The audio capturing of the videos is very good though. The front facing secondary camera does what it is made for. It takes good selfies. It is also passable for video chats.

OS and UI

Huawei Honor Bee is an Android KitKat device. The company has promised to upgrade the OS very soon. It will offer over the air update for existing customer if they wish to move to Android 5 Lollipop. There is the Huawei made Emoticon UI 3.0 on top of the original Android. That UI is simple, but user friendly. That simplicity makes it run smooth without any lag.

Emoticon 3.0 does not have a separate app drawer. All the apps are on the home screen. You can arrange these apps in folders if you wish. There are many customizable themes and widgets to give your phone a special look according to your personal preference.

The phone is loaded with many required apps like Gmail, ContactSync, CalendarSync, Talk, Drive,Hangouts, Talk, Drive, Google+, Maps, Street View,YouTube, Google PlayStore, Google PlayGames, Google PlayBooks, Google Pla yMovies, NewsStand, Google Play Music, Widevine etc.

Honor Bee has a Quad core Cortex A7 CPU clocked at 1.2 GHz. The GPU of this phone is a Mali 400 MP2. All these are on a Spreadtrum SC7731 chipset. We also know that the phone has 1GB RAM.

The performance of this device is smooth. You will not notice any lag during normal operations. You should not expect super fast performance though at that price level. You can play casual games like Temple Run or Subway Surfers without any perceptible lag. Even Asphalt 8 runs well in high settings.

It supports two mini SIMs. Both these SIM cards support 3G (21 Mbps HSDPA; 5.76 Mbps HSUPA). The call quality is good. It also supports EDGE and GPRS Class 12. You can get everything which a standard smartphone should have.

Battery Life

It has a 1730 mAh battery. It is not enough for very long time operation. According to users, it lasts 5 to 6 hours of heavy use. But if used nominally, the phone will remain on for a day or more. There is also a power saving mode which will cost you speed, but it will make the battery last for 1.5 days or more.

It can be said that Huawei Honor Bee is a good phone at low price. It is available online at a very low price of Rs 4499. If your budget does not exceed Rs 5000 thousand limit, then we will definitely recommend this phone for you.

The main competitors of this phone are Samsung Galaxy Core 2 (price Rs 6990), Micromax Unite 2 A106 (price is Rs 5499), Sony Xperia E1 Dual (price Rs 7000). Among these, only Unite 2 A106 comes very close to it at price point. Features and specifications of these phones are similar.

In short, I can say that the positive things about this phone are its look, built and performance. The camera quality is also good. The negative points of it are its not that good battery life and the outdated Android version. An update from the company will make the phone better.
