iPhone 6 Plus Review – Price in US, Specs, Features, Pictures

Updated on September 12, 2014

The iPhone 6 Plus is the latest phone launched by Apple. Discussed below are some of the salient features of this awesome gadget.

The Design

With the iPhone 6 Plus, Apple has relinquished the hard right-angled corners design and opted for the smooth edged design seen on the first iPhone. The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus weighs 172g and measures 158.1 x 77.8 x 7.1mm.

The iPhone 6 Plus has an anodized aluminum unibody with a stainless steel Apple logo mounted on the back. The power button has been moved to the sides from the top, thereby allowing users to easily access it with just one hand. The glass touchscreen curves and seamlessly blends into the metal body without any textural disturbance, thereby giving it a rich, premium appearance. The phone is available in ‘space gray,’ silver/white and gold colors.

The Screen

The iPhone 6 Plus has a beautiful 5.5-inch touchscreen with Retina HD display, 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, 401 PPI, broader viewing angles,Full HD video support, and an astounding contrast ratio of 1300:1. Apple has clarified that older apps will work just fine with the new enhanced resolution.

The larger screen size means that users may face difficulties in ease of navigation. Hence, Apple has added new features such as the ‘reachability’ option which allows the entire UI to move downwards with just a simple double tap of the home button, as well as ‘swipe-to-go-back’ gestures to move between different apps. Also, users can view portrait-locked apps in the landscape mode along with additional app functions.

Before the launch of the iPhone 6 Plus, it was speculated that the phone will come with a water resistant, shatterproof sapphire display. This has proven to be untrue.

The Performance

The iPhone 6 Plus runs on iOS 8 and is powered by a 2nd generation 64-bit A8 chip featuring 25 percent increased CPU power and 50 percent faster graphics. It can support 20 LTE bands and over 200 global LTE carriers and can do up to 150 Mbps. Users can thus expect to have 4G services almost all over the globe.

The iPhone 6 Plus also supports ‘VoLTE’ or ‘Voice over LTE.’ This means that there will be almost no disruption in data connection services during a voice call. The audio quality of a voice call will also be a lot better. The iPhone 6 Plus will be available in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB versions. It does not come in the 32 GB version.

The Camera

The iSight cameraon the iPhone 6 Plus is still an 8MP, 1080p one, along with ƒ/2.2 aperture and 1.5µ pixels. It however features a new sensor that permits ‘focus pixels,’ which is an autofocus refining feature seen in high-end DSLR cameras.

Other improved features include slo-mo videos shooting at 120 to 240 fps and videos at 30 to 60 fps; continuous and faster autofocus; panorama shots at 43 pixels; better noise reduction and local tone mapping; Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) system to compensate for a shaky camera; and efficient face identification.

The FaceTime cameraon the iPhone 6 Plus is also still 1.2 MP, 720 p. However, it now comes with a new sensor; a burst mode option that allows 10 stunning selfies per second;a bigger ƒ/2.2 aperture; and automatic high dynamic range support in video mode.

The Battery

The iPhone 6 Plus comes with a battery that is larger than iPhone 6’s 1,810mAh battery. It offers substantially improved battery times. Users can expect 80 hours of audio time;14 hours of video time;up to 44 hours of talk time over 3G;12 hours, 12 hours, and 8 to 12 hours when browsing over LTE, Wi-Fi and 3G respectively; and 16 days of standby time.

Other major features

The iPhone 6 Plus boasts of many new and improved features like 802.11ac Wi-Fi support; a barometer for measuring elevation and checking air pressure; a Wi-Fi callingoption which can be used during poor call conditions; an M8 motion co-processorbuilt for fitness applications with the capacity to distinguish between cycling, running, and elevation; and the company’s ace card, i.e., Apple Pay

Apple Pay is a secure and simple digital-wallet-like touch payment service present on the iPhone 6 Plus. Payments are made using the phone’s NFC antennas,a Passbook, and a Touch ID fingerprint sensor. In order to authorize a payment, users need to hold the iPhone next to a sensor at any store’s cashwrap and finger the TouchID button. It is currently fully backed by MasterCard, American Express, and Visa, and supported by 22,000 retailers, including Staples, Bloomingdales, etc.
