International Drum Month

Updated on January 30, 2015

November is International Drum Month

I love drums and the sound of drums but I was sure surprised to find out that there is an International Drum Month - November. In fact, there is an organization called the Percussion Marketing Council (PMC), a non-profit corporation, that sponsors International Drum Month each year in November. Last year (2012), it celebrated its 17th year. This great organization promotes percussion instrument awareness encouraging the understanding, enjoyment of drums and percussion instruments. By visiting their Web site, you can find drumming and percussion news, retailers, contests, upcoming events and more.

Last year, PMC offered a free gift (either sticks or a hand percussion) to those who what to know more about percussion instruments just by doing the following: download a coupon, either from their site or one of the participating magazines, taking it to your favorite music store, have the store employee sign it and attach one of their business cards to the coupon. Then, you mailed in the couple to PMC and you would receive free Beginner's Pack. You can't beat that (excuse the pun)!

Beat! Beat! Drums!

By Walt Whitman

"Beat! beat! drums!-blow! bugles! blow!

Through the windows-through doors-burst like a ruthless force,

Into the solemn church, and scatter the congregation,

Into the school where the scholar is studying,"

An Amazon of Drums

What kid doesn't like to beat on a can, box or any thing that will give back a sound. Drums have been around a long time. History indicates as far back as 6,000 B.C. Excavations in Mesopotamian have revealed cylindrical drums dating back to 3000 B.C.

Need more information - you are in the right groove.

I have tried to include links that involve all sites conceivable to drumming and the organization IDM. I hope you enjoy your journey.
