Advantages of OSI reference model

Updated on June 4, 2015

What is OSI reference model

OSI reference model ( Open System Interconnection ) is a model defined by ISO ( International Standard Organization ), which consists of seven layers. Each layer have specific task and the lower layer serves the upper layer. The seven layers of the model are as follows:

  1. Application Layer
  2. Presentation Layer
  3. Session Layer
  4. Transport Layer
  5. Network Layer
  6. Datalink Layer
  7. Physical Layer

Advantages of OSI reference model

The advantages of OSI reference model can be outlined as follows:

  1. Reduce Complexity
  2. Standardizes interfaces
  3. Facilitates modular Engineering
  4. Interoperability between vendors
  5. Ensures interoperable technology
  6. Accelerates evolution
  7. Simplifies teaching and learning

Practically the data communication between computers is a complex job having so many operations to be performed for a successful data communication. So for a network designer it will be difficult to design a new network architecture if all the operations are not properly organized. OSI model simplifies the tasks by classifying the different operations into different layers. For example: For data communication a session is to be created first between the sender and the receiver.
