The Best Laptops for Medical Students

Updated on February 29, 2016

Laptop Recommendations for Medical School

A laptop, these days, is a crucial part of one's education—be it for a medical school or not. A laptop suitable for medical students will have almost all of the features outlined below. These features and specifications should be taken into consideration while buying a laptop.

Below, there are a few examples of the best-recommended laptops that meet almost all the requirements of a laptop for studying medicine.

Laptop Requirements for Medical Students

1. Processor

A good laptop will have a minimum processor speed of 2.4 GHz (almost all of the laptops in 2016 that run Intel i5 or higher processor). Some laptop manufacturers still build laptops with outdated processor and sell as a "budget version", and medical students should steer clear from it.

2. RAM

At least 4 GB of RAM is recommended. 8 GB is better, but anything beyond 8GB will drain battery faster if you don't need it. Suggestion: if you are not into gaming, don't go over 8GB of RAM.

3. Software and Operating System

It does not matter if one's preference is a Windows PC or a Mac. All software typically required as a part of a medical school curriculum are compatible with both Windows and Mac OS. However, a laptop running Windows should have Windows 7 or higher. For the Mac counterpart, it should be Mac OS X 10.7.

Please note that higher versions of Mac might lead to software incompatibility issues (as in some programs taught at Penn State College of Medicine). That is why it is better to settle for a previous tried-and-tested version of Mac OS, then upgrade later.

4. Microsoft Office and Antivirus

Since most of the applications used during college courses revolve around taking notes, powerpoint slides, and giving exams in your computer, it is imperative that your laptop comes with a full version of Microsoft Office installed.

Antivirus software is also a must as you will be downloading files, exchanging notes, assignments, and project works all the time.

What is your laptop budget?
