Best Apps for Making Music on Android

Updated on May 20, 2013

Android for making music ?

When it comes to mobile music making, most of you might think about Apple iOS. There are lots of great music making apps available for Apple iOS, but it's not the only game in town.

Google's Android is, for example, is enjoying a fast growing popularity, and you will find several great and innovative music making apps for Android - if you are looking for them.

Here I've picked out some of my favorite Android music apps to introduce.

Reloop Sequencer for Android

Loop based music sequencer for your android phone

This one is a nice tool to have fun with. You can quickly compose and produce music using loops and one-shot samples like you might know from garageband or Sony's ACID.

It comes with an easy to use interface and some interesting editing features. Simply via drag and drop you can place your loops, copy and paste, slice, snap and zoom.

You can use the built-in samples or your own. There are also many free loop packages available in the android market. Play around with the effects: Delay, Distortion, Slice and Rearrange, change pitch to mention only a few and when you finished your masterpiece, you can export it to .wav format in CD Quality.

For me it's an amazing app. A little tricky figuring out at first but really fun to play around with

Electrum

Drum Machine/Sampler

Electrum is a simple drum machine app build like a classic step sequencer.

It has good built-in sounds and is expandable with free downloadable packs based on the classics like Roland 808 and 909 or own sounds.

SPC

Music Sketch Pad

SPC Sketchpad is a pad based app that lets you play loops and samples via 16 pads. You can use your own loops to manipulate or the ones included in the app or provided for download on mikrosonic's website, or mix them.

You can use a lot of effects to manipulate the sounds like reverb, phaser and distortion. You can even record any sound with your device's built-in microphone and use it.

If you are familiar with Proppelerheads' Reason, you will be surprised by the amount of manipulation possible in this program, as well as a clean and somewhat complex interface. You can alter your loops using keys, a pad, and even waveform.

RD3

Groovebox

RD3 is a really simple to use Groovebox. It comes with a beautiful Interface and contains three main features: a mixer, an analogue bassline synthesizer, and a step sequencer drum.

The synthesizer has three wave forms and also has the sequencer from the beats section. The samples used in the step sequencer drum are top-quality and are well designed; each drum piece have a knob for adjusting the punch of each one. In the mixer you can set the tempo of the groove and walk through the four bars for each instrument.

It has some requirements that you should have a look at before buying: Min. 550mhz of CPU and a HVGA screen resolution device.

There is also a free version available with ads, but it has only just one drum kit, no ability to save and no ability to export the loop.

I been both making music and producing it for awhile now. It's great to see all the music making Apps for Android hitting the market today. It is a few what I found to be hardcore Apps that wasn't mention here such as Morphwiz Play and as someone else mention the very popular Caustic Songwriter's Pad and by all means TouchDaw which is extremely useful for controlling your DAW from your Android. It function as a Controller as well having both Keyboard and Pad Controllers. Another must have that wasn't mention here is Musical Pro. Mobile wise I couldn't do without it and it is especially valuable to anyone whom want to learn to play the Piano.
