Before you buy a domain name ...
The World Wide Web provides us with countless opportunities to money earning. The condition for this is a lot of effort, a pinch of luck and minimal financial investment. Although you can get free programs and Web access, even computer equipment (used) can be free, there is still stuff which has to be bought. Among the first and the most profitable investments is certainly a purchase of the domain.
It's really easy to get one. If you are not in a hurry, you can get it pretty cheap, but the real problem is lying in choosing the right name. There is a whole science behind that seemingly simple act and my intention is to point out your main decisions before you make any wrong decision. I don't know you and have no idea what may be your goals on the web, so don't expect definite answers.
Look at this article more as an opportunity to think some things again or see the in a different light. If you have a specific question, you can use the comment section and I'll answer ASAP. Fair enough?

Before we buy a domain we should think it over!
Search engines give a lot of importance on the name of a domain. If you repair TVs, always try to get a domain name with which you do tell browsers exactly what you are doing. If you would still like to register your company name, it is wise to register two domains - one in which you highlight your business and from that one redirect potential costumers with a name of your company.
When the domain is well understood by search engines, redirect visitors to a domain where you present yourself and your services!
We actually revealed the biggest secret behind the success on the web - in most cases you need more than one domain. One for your main site and others for the support of this site. Even if you decide to use only one, it's probably a good idea to buy a domain name with different extensions (for instance: NAME.COM, NAME.ORG, NAME.NET etc.).
With this in mind, it's easy to see the price for your domain(s) can easily become an important parameter in your business, especially if it's new and without huge resources.
How many domains?
How much is too much?
Should we buy one or more domains?
Choose a reliable domain registrar
When choosing a registrar try to collect as much relevant information, especially whether existing clients are satisfied with its responsiveness, price and additional services.
You will get best information from friends and acquaintances who have experience in domain registration, with some web browsing, and especially from the forums, where satisfied and less satisfied users of the internet share their experience with the registrars.
If you are a complete beginner, it's always good to ask your friends with more experience. Some registrars are very aggressive at promotion and offer nice discounts, some can give you a hand at hosting, some are offering discounts for faithful users, what means a discount for every additional year ...
I tried several registrars so far and in my opinion, every user should count on some kind of trouble. This is not a problem if the registrar is forthcoming and willing to help you. One important factor with choosing the right registrar is definitely number of options to communicate with him:
- on-line helper with life chat window?
- phone support?
- e-mail support with tickets?
More is always better, but a small company can offer surprising flexibility. As I already said - just ask around!
What offers Amazon?
We have to start somewhere. Why not with the books for beginners? It really doesn't matter if you are going for a self-hosted blog, where you'll be responsible for everything, or you are just thinking about the right name for a sub-domain on already established public web service, the basics are still invaluable.
Of course, you can dive first and only after that check the depth of the water, but thinking twice and acting once is in general still the best approach.
This one is a classic. We already know what to expect. The series for dummies is known by straight to the point language, not too much technical jargon, A LOT of examples, nice and useful lists and of course at least some humor.
Humor is always welcome when we are dealing with technical stuff!
Domain names make interesting business opportunity. Believe it or not, there are thousands of serious business companies dealing with the domain names. Some are looking for trends and buying the names they expect can become wanted in short future, other are checking expired names with already gained authority and some are pretty successful in it!
There are of course copyright issues behind some names and you'll also need some knowledge about keyword research, if you want to join them. It makes interesting and educational reading for other people too.
When registering a domain, the most important information is the address of your e-mail. In most cases all communication between you and the registrar will take place via e-mail. It's always a good idea to have complete correspondence well-archived because you'll never know what passwords will you need in next five years.
Don't forget - this is business - so be serious about it. Have everything documented and make every step with all the responsibility. Even if you have somebody who will take care about the technicalities instead of you, you have to understand the basics. Otherwise, you'll have zero control of one something what might become a cornerstone of your business in next few years.
Short tutorial on domain buying and setup
What about free domain names?
Yes, you read it right. You can skip this cost and get a domain for free. Of course, you can't get a COM or ORG extension without payment, but CO.CC and TK offer exactly that.
As you probably already heard there is no such thing as free lunch and same is true when you are using one of the freebies in this area. CO.CC (and its clones) is actually not an extension. It's a domain and you can get a free sub-domain, just like in free blogging platforms, just with fewer characters overall.
TK is on the other hand real extension and it may be interesting to write a complete article about it. I used it for some time in different on-line projects with varying success and still use three of them. They are definitely not completely useless.
But for this article, I will only say - with free extensions you can't get complete control of your site. It's the situation just like you named your company, established a brand, pay for advertisements, sign deals with partners and then suddenly somebody takes the name for himself and use it for his own business. So in short - don't use free domain names.
