Nikon Coolpix L830 Vs Canon PowerShot SX510 Digital Camera Review
Canon Powershot SX510 Vs Nikon CoolPix L830
The Canon PowerShot SX510 is a surprisingly small bridge camera with an impressive 30X zoom. The lens provides wide-angle shots for taking distant objects such as animals.
Despite its plastic housing, the camera is built to handle well. The ergonomically designed rubberized grip at the front provides a secure grip, the buttons have good pressure points and the turning wheels are smooth.
Surprisingly, the Canon PowerShot given up on the megapixel race and the number of megapixels have reduced from 16MP in its predecessor (SX500) to 12.1MP in the current model. This means that the individual pixels of the sensor are larger and have to share less light. The light sensitivity is therefore higher in this model, the noise lower and resolution better especially in low light conditions. This shows that megapixels are not everything when it comes to picture quality.
The Canon Powershot SX510 produces images with beautiful colours that can be used for large formats – 30x zoom may also be used when doing full-HD video recording with stereo sound.
For serious amateur photographers, the SX510 comes with full manual controls, long exposure on a tripod will therefore not be a problem. For those who do not want to deal with the settings, the camera has an Auto mode that comes with some fun art filters such as fish-eye or miniature.
The additional Wi-Fi function allows the camera to connect to a smartphone and also gives you the ability to edit the photos on your phone/ tablet and forward them directly to user of Flickr, Instagram or Facebook.
- Good Workmanship, soft grip handle
- Great zoom
- Good picture and video quality
- Full manual control
- WLAN function
In conclusion the SX510 is a very good compact camera for beginners because of the wonderful zoom and ability to share the images on Wi-Fi directly.
Nikon Coolpix L830 Digital Camera
Featuring a remarkable zoom function, the Nikon Coolpix L830 digital camera is easy to operate using a clear menu navigation.
For those who have been using big cameras with telephoto lenses and just want something lighter and compact when travelling, this is the camera for you.
Now you do not need to carry all that photographic equipment which can be quite heavy.
The Nikon Coolpix L830 digital camera comes with a fantastic zoom feature and plenty of pre-defined programs to cover pretty much any situation.
The camera feel good in the hand and though it is reasonably priced, does not look cheap. One small drawback is that the memory slot is located in the battery compartment. However, that is something I can live with.
I was looking on the internet for a camera that is not too expensive – the type that is not high-end but for using on holiday or at home. When I came across the Nikon Coolpix L830, I thought to myself –what can one really expect for a device priced under $200? Looking at all the positive reviews the camera was getting, I was convinced to buy it and I must say I was not disappointed.
After buying the camera, I further ordered a few more components:
- Rechargeable batteries
- Intercept Vantage TY-4 Bag
- 16GB Transcend memory card (which enough to store around 4000 pictures at a resolution of 4608X3456 and approximately 30 minutes of 1080/25 video)
The camera itself comes with the following things as standard:
- Multi-lingual Quick Start guide
- Lens cap plus attachment strap
- USB cable
- Batteries (non-rechargeable)
I was very surprised when I opened the package containing my camera. The camera looks very classy and awesome. The device feels very good on the hands and is equipped with grooves on the right side to prevent slipping. The buttons are well positioned and easy to press which is a really important fact especially if you are snapping impromptu photos on holiday.
The camera contains a flash that has to be manually activated as well as two zoom switches on the left. Also on the left side are micro HDMI and USB connections. To operate, simply turn on the camera, set the date, time and time-zone and you are ready to start snapping high quality photos.
As a default setting, the camera makes a beeping sound each time you press a key. This setting was annoying to me so I immediately disable it. The swivelling display is a main highlight of the camera and I personally think it is was very well thought out.
On taking my first photo, I immediately thought – Wow! Super sharp, very natural and the auto-focus is very fast. The zoom is a dream with this small camera- even from a distance of 50m everything is easy to see and very detailed.
I must say that I was surprised with the performance of the batteries – even after taking around four hundred photos, the batteries are still full(at least according to the display). The camera also has a special program for transferring the photo and movies to the PC for editing and sharing. Details of the software are described in the Quick Start Guide.
The contents of the camera can be downloaded directly onto your PC via a USB cable or a SDHC memory card (assuming of course that it has a card reader). Anyone looking for a high performance camera for a little money will not be disappointed with this camera. I highly recommend the Nikon Coolpix L830.
The video recording is fair but you should not forget the fact that this is basically a digital camera. For top quality video recordings, it would be better if you went for a camcorder.
In conclusion, the camera is a decent device for its price range. Other advantages are:
- Logically positioned buttons that are easy to use
- Intuitive menu navigation
On the negative side, the positioning of the SD card slot within the battery compartment was not a very clever idea as it is an inconvenience. This means that every time you need to access you SD slot, there will be a possibility of the batteries falling off.
I was at first surprised that the Nikon Coolpix does not come with rechargeable batteries. But maybe the thinking behind that was that since the camera is for travelling, disposable batteries are more suited because of lack of charging stations. But that is just my opinion.
Apart from the power supply, the L830 is such as popular travel camera because it is relatively compact and popular. Losing a Nikon Coolpix L830 is not such a big financial loss as it would be if you lost one of the high-end expensive devices.
One of the most important features of a camera is its image quality. In sunshine and good lighting conditions (ISO 100 to ISO 200), the L830 performs well against its peers. The zoom range of the L830 can only be described in one word – breath-taking. It compensates for the small image sensor that to bring enough light to the camera. The small image sensor means that there is less area to be illuminated and the zoom acts as a focal length extension.
Despite its minimal negatives, the Nikon Coolpix L830 digital camera is a highly recommended product especially for travellers.
The compact and ergonomic housing, impressive zoom range, quality of materials and flawless workmanship are good reasons to buy the camera. With its simple operation, good images and useful features, the camera is a must for people looking for quality at an affordable price.
Other features that make the camera such an easy sell include:
- Swivelling display that can be seen perfectly in any light intensity
- Sophisticated, easy and intuitive handling
- Integrated processor that is very reliable and quite fast – which is important for the proper operation of the lens and motor
- Integrated software for a variety of screen modes and effects gives you leeway to express your creativity. You can create incredible 180 or 360 degree panoramic views using this feature
- Excellent colour fidelity and noise-free images normal light to medium light conditions
- Good colour fidelity and noise-free images in low light at dusk or at night
- Internal recording mode that produces amazing indoor pictures
- Good quality videos in full HD resolution with acceptable stereo sound (as with all cameras, the Coolpix L830 is constructed to work with a steady hand if you are to get halfway respectable videos. However, the image stabiliser in this camera does not do a very good job in reducing the wiggling effect)
- Operated using conventional batteries that are easy to replace (though not very environmentally-friendly in my opinion)
- Autofocus function makes it easy for anybody to use the camera - be it a professional or aspiring photographer
The Nikon Coolpix represents a good compromise between performance and size. Normal digital cameras in the lower and mid-priced range in my opinion do not differentiate from smartphones. On the other hand SLR cameras are expensive, bulky and only come with even more expensive zoom lens.
Though the camera can be powered by four standard AA batteries, I highly recommend that you invest some extra money in lithium batteries so as to increase you usage time.
The Nikon Coolpix L830 16MP Digital Camera can be purchased on Amazon for only $196.95:
