Microsoft Outlook Error - Link Operation Has Been Cancelled

Updated on June 25, 2015

This error can also occur when user has all the administrative authorities and privileges. The error message however can differ with respect to the version of Outlook application. For instance; the error message which is commonly received is; “This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.”

In MS Outlook application 2013 this below mentioned message is displayed instead of “restriction in effect”;

What Can Be The Possible Reasons For Such Errors?

The very first disclosure to be made here is that despite of the issue is caused while opening the Outlook email hyperlink; the error does not exactly belong to MS Outlook application. Indeed it is caused due to the web browser settings glitch. For instance, if user has Chrome installed in his system as default browser and then he uninstalls Google Chrome browser without Internet Explorer or any other browser assigned to be default web-browser; it can result into such error.

Nowadays users might have realized that while downloading Adobe Flash, Chrome is automatically downloaded and set as default browser if user does not select the apt option and cease it from getting downloaded. Along with Google Chrome, Firefox, and other HTML rendering programs take HTML open command can cause this type of error. So, one can infer from this that the unavailability of a default Internet browser with proper registration can lead to such error. There can be other instances as well for such error to cause. But this doesn’t mean that the MS Outlook application is having any issues or damages in it.

Proposed Solutions to Resolve This Error

#1. Edit Registry

If you have uninstalled any application which comprises the HTML open command like Chrome, Firefox browsers, etc. You will also require changing the HTM/HTML association in registry.

  • Go to Start >> Run and type Regedit in box opened in order to edit the registry.
  • Click ok and browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.html
  • Now right-click on the value for .html key and then select Modify.
  • Change the value of “ChromeHTML” to “htmlfile” (according to the browser available)
  • Repeat this step for .htm, .xht, .shtml, .xhtml, .xhtm keys

#2. Assign Default Browser

If editing registry does not help, you can also try to reset the assigned default browser for your Windows system. If you are not able to perform editing in the registry then also you can prefer the below mentioned steps to set default browser.

  • For Windows 8: Go to Start>> Default Programs or Open Control Panel >> Programs >> Default Programs
  • For Windows Vista/Windows 7: Go to Start and type Default Programs
  • Windows XP: Go to Control Panel >> Set Program Access & Defaults

Users having many web-browsers can try to set another browser first as default, apply changes and then set the preferred browser as default again. This will refresh the settings and changes made and avoid any glitches.

Conclusion

The MS Outlook error - “Link Operation has been cancelled” occurs as Windows system is unable to recognize the web-browser to which the hyperlink should be opened. If the default browser set by you gets un-installed, this error can occur. Re-installing all the web-browsers, and setting a particular browser as default can resolve the error message for most of the users. Editing registry can also fix the errors to some extents. Users can go for relevant methods as per their convenience.
